He's a couple of months old, and I expected more green... healthy or a lost cause?

Does not look healthy, but you never know if it will turn out fine in the longer run.
If it is too red, it is probably exposed to way too much sun intensity (and maybe heath too). How are the growing conditions?

He’s outdoors on the patio here in Orange County... will try more shade, though this spot only gets partial sun.

At 2 months, I would have still had it in the baggie, it would still like 100% humidity at this age. Can't go back to that now, though, it would probably rot. Give it more shade, good chance it will green up. That's about all you can do.
