Cactus ID

I was given this large cactus last week and I would like to know what it is. It's 17"H X 7"W. Could someone give me a name for it? Thanks.

Maybe Echinopsis oxygona

It's a type that's generally known as Echinopsis eyriesii, though many authorities consider it the same species as E. oxygona. See:

Yes both so called "species" grow in the same population the spiny and the spineless. In the early days when plants were sent to Europe we did not know about natural variation in habitat and the information that came with them did not indicate they both came from the same population, so anything that looked different got a different name. Often the habitat given was also the port they were shipped from and not where they were actually collected.
