Ribbed cactus ID

Post by MagiCarpus »

Hi folks,
Brought this home from a local market, and I’m having trouble honing in on even the genus. At first glance I thought it might be a ferocactus of some kind but most ferocactus aren’t this neatly ridged when small. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

looks like it indeed. I definitely did no expect this, as not once did Parodia gloss over my mind. Morphological wise it seems to stray far from that of typical Parodias. Thank you very much!

This is one of the notocactus species that has been lumped with parodias. More commonly seen under notocactus buiningii.

In fact it is a Notocactus that is closer to what used to be called Wigginsia or Malacocarpus with the sharply defined ribs.

A Malacocarpus for comparison. As Dan says Hunt lumped all these genera into Parodia:-
