Hello Everyone,
Been awhile. I've had several cactus coming up from seeds in my garden. I believe they are 100% hybrids. They are Opuntia and Cylindropuntia. One opuntia came up that I have never had in my yard. It grows not far from here in the hills. I've not had Opuntia or Cylindropuntia in my yard for 4 or 5 years.
Anyway, Here is the most interesting 2 yr old seedling in my yard. See Photo #1.
#2 is a shot of part of my yard. Notice the grasses I've planted to protect the cactus from harsh UV rays. It is working great.
Oh, I could not load the second photo. But this photo shows the strange cactus that came up in my garden. It looks like a cholla hybrid with a opuntia.
I have several other strange looking cactus coming up.
Be Well, Charles, Sparks NV

Re: Hybrid Cactus
Seedling looks like Opuntia erinacea to me. All seedling Opuntia have cylindrical stems at first which makes them look like Cylindropuntia (and shows their ancestry).

Re: Hybrid Cactus
Thanks for the tip. It may get much larger. I used to have some big opuntia in my yard.
Oh, I've been cleaning my garden like crazy. Under two of my very old Grusonia purcella I found four seedlings of other cactus. That plant must be hospitable for seeds.

Re: Hybrid Cactus
The growth has slowed, but it is still very healthy. Most Opuntia in my garden grow through winter-go figure.

Re: Hybrid Cactus
I’ve been growing cactus for about 20 yrs. in Sparks, NV. I decided to select the best all-around hardy cactus from my garden. I ended up with four candidates; (Note, I’m no expert on cactus names. I can’t even pronounce them.) Forgive my photo expertise, for I have none. --photos not in order.
Hardy1: 5 Stars for Sun, heat, drought, Cold, snow; slow grower- Echinocereus coccineus v? NM
Hardy2: 5 Stars for Sun, heat, drought, Cold, snow; slow grower-Echinocereus paucispinus v? western UT
Hardy3: 5 Stars for Sun, heat, draught, Cold, snow; slow grower- Echinocereus coccineus v? Jarilla Mts. NM
Hardy4: 5 Stars for Sun, heat, drought, Cold, snow; slow grower-Escobaria from Lincoln Co. New Mexico
