Re: Unnamed Avonia
Unnamed as in you don't know the name? or unnamed in that it hasn't been described yet?
Either way, it's a beaut with those big flowers! Wouldn't mind getting my hands on it

Really like that! Love those little white flowers.
Re: Unnamed Avonia
Not described yet. I'll be getting seed during the summer, but each stem only creates a handful of seed, so it won't be in commercial quantities.CoronaCactus wrote:Unnamed as in you don't know the name? or unnamed in that it hasn't been described yet?

Re: Unnamed Avonia
Avonias sure are a delight. This one is very nice as well. I'd love some seeds if don't have plans for them already.
Re: Unnamed Avonia
I generally find Avonias pretty straightforward to grow and reasonably quick to flower from seed. Not so this one. A new species, A. harveyi, over a year old and I doubt it will flower this year.

Hmmm... I know a Tim Harvey who is a serious grower and collector of succulents (he is the CSSA Journal editor). I wonder if that is named after him?

It is! He discovered it 2006 but it wasn't formally described until 2011.Saxicola wrote:Hmmm... I know a Tim Harvey who is a serious grower and collector of succulents (he is the CSSA Journal editor). I wonder if that is named after him?

Cool. I'll have to ask him if he is still growing it and has some of it to share.

Re: Unnamed Avonia
I think it was on a trip with John Lavranos? or John had some hand in it anyway. Pretty cool to have a plant named after you, also cool to know the people they are named after.iann wrote:It is! Re: Unnamed Avonia
With the "i" ending it would suggest Tim discovered it or played an important role in the discovery of the plant. Maybe John was leading the trip and Tim was the first person to spot it.
Edit: I just checked and Lavranos is one of the authors of the species.

Yes, apparently John was also on the trip. He was also one of the authors who published the description.
It comes from pretty far north in Namibia, summer rainfall area I guess, and found on limestone.
