Louisiana Iris

Post by Joel143 »

Since most of my cacti are showing only buds now I figured I'd show blooms from our local state iris that I have in bloom now. I have a fourth that suppose to be yellow but only buds right now.

A nice blue

a very poor pic but its a very dark purple - almost black in appearance

so far my favorite. Until the yellow blooms

nice. :) I like Irises. AZ has one, but it grows un north and isn't zoned for down south. (I also don't live in an area where it's flooded for half the year) (the Iris is Iris missourensis)
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.

I've tried the bearded Irises but I don't have luck with those; don't know why or what I'm doing wrong. Sooo, think I will stick with my local state iris instead.

Had some nice bearded Irises until the gophers got to them before I got the gophers. I got some Naked Ladies for free and I'm growing them in pots. Gopher proof.

Wasn't sure at first on getting them because I had a damp area near my greenhouse that needed something. I didn't know what the bloom colors were but now am so pleased with my choices. I think you first photo is a dutch iris. :)

Dutch irises and bearded irises should be easer to grow than louisiana unless you live in a wet area. My understanding is the dutch and bearded like it somewhat drier.
My knowledge only goes as far as seeing what my father has growing and hybridizing over many years I personally only have a couple of bearded.
All of the ladies/girls in our family have a hybrid iris named after them. :)

midlife crisis - hmm interesting if it is a Dutch iris. I've had it for years and it grows in my drainage ditch that stays wet if not flooded when it rains days on end. I will have to look further into that and go to the source where I got it a few years ago. Wonder if its a hybrid? Either way it seems to love where its at, I always have to thin it out because it grows like a weed...lol

It could be the photo or I could just be wrong. :) I never really took a great interest in them when I was younger I just got so used to seeing them in the hundreds all of the time in my fathers garden. That said as I have matured I do find some of them interesting. The Japanese and Louisiana have some really cool hybrids.

Cheers

Well if it is a possible hybrid between a Dutch and Louisiana iris that's ok with me. I mainly like the color. I want to eventually remove it from my drainage ditch and place it in another damp area near my greenhouse. I really wish I could grow the bearded irises but everytime I try I lose them quickly within the first year. And never a bloom. Guess bearded irises aren't my thing.
