Norwegian Cactus Identification

Post by fishstyx »

Hello, I received a clipping of a cactus from a friend who brought this cactus from his home town in Norway many years ago but didn't know the name or ID. I'm hoping someone may know it's proper name or any related history about it's origin since it just produced new blooms this year.

Being a Swede from birth I'll unfortunately have to tell you those Norwegian's can't be trusted ;)
That's not a cactus but rather a Stapeliad of some sort.

btw It has very lovely flowers no matter what it is or isn't. I know that it's a Stapelia .. I would go with grandiflora only cause I am no expert at IDing those, but I have a few myself.
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.

I wondered why someone from Australia would call themselves Snowfella! Now it makes sense. One of my best friends is a Swede that lives in Thailand. Seems like a lot of you escape your homeland for warmer climates!

Back on topic, I agree with Tony that the plant looks like Stapelia grandiflora.
I'm now selling plants on Ebay. Check it out! Kyle's Plants

It seems to me that the flowers of this plant are not as big as those of Stapelia grandiflora. Perhaps it is rather Stapelia hirsuta ?

This site has a brief description of both S. grandiflora and S. hirsuta. Hopefully this will help you narrow it down.
Both are closely related and are highly variable from what I understand.

Once bitten by the cactus collecting/growing bug, there is no known cure!
There's no 12 step programme for Cactaholics...so I shall just have to get some more!!
