ha, nice photo! They are so cute when they are babies.
"Biggest" is somewhat of a vague term in my mind. There's "most massive" (that is, heaviest, literally the most mass), then there is tallest, densest or most wide, etc.
I think Pachycereus pringlei is usually called the "biggest," but I have seen some photos of other Mexican Pachycereus (forget the species) that are just outrageously huge. I have also seen some truly huge and heavy Pachycereus pringlei.

Maybe Pachycereus weberi ? I think so that some species of Pachycereus are the biggest cacti.peterb wrote:... I have seen some photos of other Mexican Pachycereus (forget the species) that are just outrageously huge.
Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize that we cannot eat money.

I don't think pachycereus weberi is bigger than pachycereus pringlei, usually P.pringlei is bigger.Ralf wrote:Maybe Pachycereus weberi ? I think so that some species of Pachycereus are the biggest cacti.

there is one of the jungle cacti that is growing on either ASU, or UA (AZ state, or University of AZ) that is the worlds tallest. It's anchored to I think it was a 7 story building and is almost all the way to the top.
(I wanna say it's in Tuscon, so it's at UofA but I can't remember)
BTW biggest, tallest, heaviest etc is all relative. It could depend on some factors. For instance natively grown vs a plant in a collection... etc.
I do know that the champion Tallest Saguaro was killed by a combination of fire damage AND flooding.

I recently read of someone in India who has the tallest recorded cactus in the world, a Cereus peruvianus, which is 78.8 feet tall, (and knocked the 77-78 foot Saguaro off the top spot for height) and was put in the record books in december 2009... funnily enough there were no pictures of either but it is an official record, apparently!
Never turn your back on a cactus

Re: Biggest cacti???
btw as an aside I know this is old, but the largest saguaro in the world was killed by the 2005 Cave Creek Complex fire. Essentially it was killed by taking on too much water.
