light requirements

Post by RichR »

The light intensity throughout my greenhouse is not the same everywhere. Some areas get more direct sunlight and some get more shade. I'm trying to determine which of the following genera (if any) will tend to do well with less sunlight than others:

Ancistrocactus / Sclerocactus
Ariocarpus
Astrophytum
Coryphantha
Echinocereus
Echinomastus
Echinopsis / Lobivia
Eriosyce
Escobaria
Gymnocalycium
Mammillaria
Parodia/Notocactus
Rebutia
Turbinicarpus

I do keep my echinopsis hybrids out of the hottest and brightest afternoon sunlight. I've already scorched a couple so I learned that pretty quick.

Any advice is much appreciated.

I guess these could take somewhat less light:
Echinopsis/Lobivia
Gymno
Parodia/Noto

Oddly, I have also found that Ariocarpus grow better in slight shade, at least here in Phoenix, something I didn't expect. Astrophytum appreciate some shade here also and the Gymnocactus group of Turbis also. But this is just my observation in the searing conditions of Phoenix.

The plants on your list that I have found grow best in as much direct sunlight as possible (once they are acclimated) are Ancistro/Sclero, Corys, Echinomastus, Escobaria.
