Echinocereus i know because it came from a pack of Echinocereus mixed seeds
the nearest i can find is Echinocereus berlandieri ..........am i anywhere near

I have an identical plant labeled scheeri var. obscuriensis, but haven't been able to find much info on that variety.

Definitely pentalophus, very pretty! Nice spines. Daiv, enneacanthus always has "magenta flowers with darker throats," quoting Anderson. Also, generally larger stems and more ribs.

That looks like dasyacanthus to me. The flower will seal it.

finally got the flower to open, been overcast and raining on and off for days
