Cristates...

Post by Neko Bazu »

I could be wrong, but I thought crested cacti were supposed to be slower growers than their 'normal' counterparts?

Mammillaria spinossisima cristate, before and after. These two pictures are less than three months apart - and yes, that is the same pot!

Someone forgot to tell her the rules, apparently

Neko,
I don't know if they are any slower then regular ones. The mother plant and my baby of the C. fulgida var mammillata cristate are all growing like crazy right now. They must really like the hot drier weather. (we did get rain last night)

I think it might depends on the species as well. I am pretty sure that a crested saguaro takes as long to get it's arms, if it gets any at all as a regular one does.
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.

looking at the pics it appears to me that your plant has just plumped up, but not really grown bigger.

I did consider that possibility, but I didn't think plumping up could nearly double the cactus' size!

That said, it'd explain the faster-than-expected "growth"
