The name of this plant has been a headache for many of us. We have confirmed it is a Oscularia. Buck Hemmingway and others call it O. primiverna, which it could be from the description in "Vygies, Gems of the Veld"

Buck had great big piles of them in his garden, it made a fantastic ground cover

But to me, it looks more like O. steenbergensis in the pictures of the same book. It is also the earliest flowerer of the genus. Any one else?

Oscularia names are a nightmare, especially considering the genus was enlarged so recently. It could be either or neither.

The Lampranthus might be L. aureus. Lampranthus names are at least as difficult as Oscularia but this one is fairly common under that name.

Avonia names are defined much more clearly and this one is A. quinaria ssp quinaria. Ssp alstonii has larger white flowers. Still no chance here. Snow this week.

You could fill a greenhouse with just one species! That does look like "Alveolatus".

Same plant after a couple days in the sun
A. marianae herrei "Red Coral"
Image
Another one with a nice sun burn
Image
A. marianae herrei "Raspberry Carbuncle"
Image
Red Licorice on the left, Raspberry Carbuncle middle, Butter Nut right, for comparision
I can't tell the difference between this red licorice and raspberry carbuncle, we will have to grow them some more to see if they are different clones or not, I pretty sure they are.
Image
A. marianae "Little Spheroid", small plants, the big ones have gotten a bit scraggly

Stunning photos as usual, Craig. I think I may have to pick up a cutting of the Adromischus 'Lime Drops' from you sometime.

Yeah I'll say. The flowers look like Dandelions that grew from a deformed green blob of plastic or something!
Cool succulents, I don't have very many but they sure are neat :)
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.

That's dormant? What does it look like when it's awake?
