It all started last September, when my mother offered me some little plants (not only cacti) for my 30th birthday coz I seldom celebrate my birthdays anyway and she was running out of ideas for a small present.
She later confessed she would have never expected the outcome... :P

Fun thread. :D

I was surprised at a few people's ages.

I'm 35 soon to be 36 and female.

Daiv, if you ever do make T-shirts, be sure to make some X-Small -- I'm sick of all the cool shirts being miles too big for me! :protest:

BTW, a climate poll wouldn't necessarily show indoor vs. outdoor growers. I, for one, live in one of the best places to grow cacti and I'm an indoor grower.

WOW, I'm surprized to see the low % of ages 60-69. I'm proud to 1 of them. I'll be 62 in Aug. but I still feel 25, I think.

Yes, not too many is right. Many I know in that age group and older either don't have a computer at all, or if they do, don't use it for "socializing". I've seen just hte opposite in the local in-person clubs - be they cacti related or otherwise. I think the Herpetological Society is where I've seen the most even mix of age groups. :-k

And this all makes sense, I guess. The key being that members do their best to bridge the gaps. Young folks ought to "respect the aged" and older folks ought to be willing to pass on their knowledge to and encourage the whipper snappers.

(I didn't realize I had so much to say about that!)

Atypical (a little)

Post by Gale M »

Well, since I am a female and maybe a bit younger, does that mean I am atypical for the group? Not that it matters one wit to me. :)

first cactus plant

Post by A. Dean Stock »

I guess I'm one of the oldest here. I "collected" an Opuntia in the back yard and put it in a pot at the age of about 10 (1948). I kept that Opuntia until some time in the 60s when moving to the Univ. of Utah (snow country) for graduate work forced me to leave it at home. Now I do research on Opuntia and live about 20 miles from the type localities of both O. pinkavae and O. aurea.

Dean,
Thrilled to see you join the forum!

Andy, Dean has sent me photos of these to include here on the guide. I am just so delayed this year from the van break down and my schedule getting all out of whack from that.

I hope to have those pictures up before the end of the month. I also have contributions and notes on Opuntia from another fellow named Marc.

Thanks Andy and Daiv. Happy to join the forum. I've contributed to several orchid fora in the past but this site is the most interesting of all I've seen. Great work by Daiv and all concerned. I have tons of photos of Opuntia and other cacti from the southern Utah/northern Arizona area and will attempt to post some of those in the future.

I'm 33-M. Got my first cacti at a thrift shop when I was in Jr high, they were 3 Echinopsis and a O. microdaisies. The Opuntia met with foul play after it tagged one too many teen siblings, but I still have the Echinopsis.

I'd tried growing cacti from seed back then once, but rapidly killed them. I ordered some cactus seed about 4 years ago (astros, ect) and gave it another try, following the directions online. It was pretty straightforward, and I've been sowing seed every year since - so I have lots of plants (thousands), but they're all small. Some of the earliest sowings are starting to flower, others - it's going to be a while.

Well, I'm in the minority, as I'm a female under twenty. My first succulent was jade bush (which started my love of succulents) and my first cacti were Christmas presents I got two years ago. Alas, two are now dead but the others are still going strong.
Nothing smells as sweet as a frangipani flower...
