December 2017- Opuntia humifusa

Post by stefan m. » Tue Dec 05, 2017 6:06 pm

So since nobody liked to step up, ive decided to elect the plant for this month-
Everyones favourite hardy , easy to grow and flower ,grafting stock cactus -the opuntia humifusa
Alternatives : Opuntia compresa, others
Origin : Eastern USA(great lakes-southward)
Habitat: Various,
Sun exposure:full sun-to light shade
Hardiness: Hardy to -30C'/-25 F
Watering requirements:Normal, wet tolerant
Size: Up to 1 m high, half on average
Appearance: Sprawling, shrublike , oval flat pads, dull green, glochids, long spines if present, wrinkled during and after low temperatures
Traits: Clumping, seed and pad propagation, common
Flowers: Poltmerous , yellow, .Fruit is red, smaller than ficus indica
Flower period:april-to june(my experience
Famous for: One of the most durable cactus species in existence, its has spread to many parts of the usa and europe, and others in the world. Invasive in some regions, including an remote village area in my country called "klisura"-lit. canyon.
Care : Easy
Susceptibility:Cochineal, slugs..
My personal experience- managed to survive a really wet(2 y ago) and and really cold winter(last year) , 2 times pot and plant fallen, and managed to double in size and flower to boot afterwards. A plant thats tough as nails.

It is definitely a tough plant that should be grown outdoors. I put some my seedlings in a pot outside for their first winter.

Established in many parts of Europe where appropriate habitats exist.

They are beautiful. A neighbor down the street had a patch of them.

Ive seen cylindropuntia imbrictata survive but not without damage- survived, but not as vigorous as it used to be.
