Here I am once again with a lengthy series of digital images showing the unique, naturally occurring hybrid cacti found near the small New Mexico city of Orogrande. A group of about one dozen people did make the trip this year on March 26th. The weather was nice (mid 70's) - not too hot yet - and the winds only picked up starting in the afternoon, shortly before we went home.
First I am going to show the viewers a few scenic photos. Those will be followed by some wild flower, shrubs, and succulents other than cacti.
I shall start with the presentation of the cacti tomorrow.

Well, I was posting too many images, so I had to log in once more. There are only a few more left before I get to the cacti.

Re: Orogrande, NM Hybrid Claret Cup Cacti 2016
Thank you very much, K.W.. Going on the yearly field trip to Orogrande, NM makes me feel like a kid in a toy store! There are still so many cactus plants left and you never know, what you are going to spot in the field. There was an area, however, which looked like someone had removed the plants and only shallow holes were evident where they used to be. I only hope, that this was not really true, because it would be a shame.
Well, today I shall present the main parents of the naturally occurring claret cup hybrids. Before I post the images, however, I want to tell the viewer, that these are truly very special plants. The last article published by the beautiful cactus and succulent magazine "Cactus & Co" appeared last year and had the title "The Echinocereus Species of Orogrande". The authors were the German couple Traute and Joern Oldach and a fellow named Michael Lange, who contacted me, asking me to proofread the English text and for digital images of the plants. I was very happy to see a whole addendum of cactus pictures I had taken in such a colorful and impressive publication.
Now to the reason, why these cacti are so special to me and perhaps why they may be unique to our area.
The parent encountered most frequently is the claret cup and most of the hybrids do show the general characteristics of Echinocereus coccineus.
This plant flowers over an extended period of time. Each plant is either male or female and the individual blossoms remain open and ready for pollination for about one week. During cooler weather that will be even longer. Because of the imperfect flowers, this plant does need a second plant of the opposite sex in order to produce fruit on the female plant. This can result in for example pollen from a flowering E. dasyacanthus to be deposited on the stigma of a female E. coccineus, i.e. in hybridization.
The plant produces more flower buds than the other main parent, the Texas Rainbow (Echinocereus dasyacanthus). Because the buds do not all open at the same time, the flowering season is pretty long.
Another minor parent, the Echinocereus viridis ssp. chloranthus also does have a long flowering period. However, that species is not found very often.
The micro climate also makes it possible for the E. dasyacanthus to hybridize with E. coccineus, when the former is growing in a more sunny location and the latter in a more shaded one. That way both plants may flower at the same time. Usually, the E. dasyacanthus blooms later than the E. coccineus. Other possible mates for cross-pollination within the genus Echinocereus are E. fendleri (another rare cactus with a late flowering habit) and E. stramineus, which also blooms too late to naturally be involved in the hybridization process.
I think, that I have confused everybody enough now and will start with the images. As you can see, the flower buds on the E. dasyacanthus stems are still closed, while those of the E. coccineus specimens are wide open.

Re: Orogrande, NM Hybrid Claret Cup Cacti 2016
I am going to add a few additional images of the odd-colored specimens photographed. I called that batch "pastel colored".
The color range for these hybrids with the scientific name "Echinocereus x roetteri" can range from pure white to pink, orange, and all the way to a nice deep red. In addition, there are all the odd shades of color possible as you can see from the image of my avatar here.

Re: Orogrande, NM Hybrid Claret Cup Cacti 2016
I apologize for having added a small image of the "Pastel E x roetteri14". I have no idea how that happened. All the other images were size to 600x450 pixels.
So, here is the correct version. The orange-colored and those beautiful pink blossoms will be posted tomorrow.

Those flowers just look so unreal.

Hello once again,
I am going to add at least all the "orange-colored" images today and perhaps finish the series with the pink flowers.
Yes, Kristian, the range of colors is amazing and so is the general floral display of these plants. The other principal parent does produce much larger blossoms and the flowers can also have various shades color. However, that kind of plant is not encountered as often as the one that phenotypically resembles the claret cup parent.
Well, here is the cactus hybrid showing what I believe to fall into the "orange" color category.

Re: Orogrande, NM Hybrid Claret Cup Cacti 2016
I had intended to have already finished the image series, but got delayed.
So, here is now the final group of pictures. There are many of them, because I get a little "over-excited" when I see so many plants in bloom.
I hope, you can forgive me for my ex exuberance. I just love these hybrids!
Most of the cacti in bloom had pink flowers and those will be shown now.

Re: Orogrande, NM Hybrid Claret Cup Cacti 2016
Due to the fact, that only 25 images can be posted at once, I am going to add the last ones now.
With this series of pictures, you have pretty much seen everything I experienced on my field trip to Orogrande, New Mexico.
In my opinion, this is a place worth visiting for everyone who loves cacti.
