Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota

Post by zoltan »

A couple days ago I've been in the south unit of the National Park. I was looking for Escobaria missourensis. At first I found a lonely Escobaria vivipara, later close to the Jones Creek trail I found a lot of E.missourensis. I could easily spot them "thanks" for a wildfire that happened last year. These plants were suffering some burn, but they are still alive, some of them already blooming. A little bit farther I found more healthty plants. Also some early bloomers and more with buds.

Great report thank you.
I am wondering how far is this place from that where Thomas Nuttall discovered his Cactus viviparus (aka Escobaria vivipara) and Cactus mammillaris (aka Escobaria missouriensis) in 1811, that is reported near Fort Lisa, close to the village of Mandan indians...

Nice to see in a place you don't normally associate with cacti! I pretty much always am thankful for wildfires except when they damage homes. Most of the country, especially the midwest and west need regular fires for diverse native landscapes to thrive. I'm sure those cacti love the increased sunlight they are now getting.
I'm now selling plants on Ebay. Check it out! Kyle's Plants

Finaly I found Escobaria missourensis with ripe fruit. I found more Escobaria vivipara, but all of them single plant. Probably I could find more when they are blooming. Opuntia polyacantha also ready for blooming.

Lovely images! Our local Escobaria and Opuntia wild plants should be flowering any moment. I'm going next week to check that too. :D
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.
