Cereus jamacaru in habitat - Paraíba, Brazil

Post by Brunãozinho »

Cereus Jamacaru is a quite tipical cacti in the brazilian Caatingas (means white forests in the native tupi-guarani language), situated in the northeast of the country.
I live in the middle of the Paraíba state, here you can find those in natural habitat almost everywhere. They only don't grow in some more humid places and in the Atlantic Forest, wich is located closer to the ocean.

Their popular name is Cardeiro, along with the Facheiros they are the tallest and I guess the most known cacti here. Some people appreciate their fruits.
In the dry season they are also used by locals to feed cattle, if there is no ration, cultivated Opuntia or other options.

In September last year I took a camera with me while taking a walk in the surroundings of my grandfather's house and I could take some pictures of some young C. jamacaru.

On the road there are some Opuntia that local farmers use to avoid trespassing or to keep their goats inside. On the left background there is a Facheiro.

Thanks for the tour! I especially like the wasp nest in the cactus, and the iguana, too.

Thank you for showing us photos of Cereus jamacaru in habitat!

It is always nice to see cacti in their native habitat, and adds to the fascination of growing one yourself.

Again, thank you.
