Crime deterrent.

Post by Prospector »

When I lived in Yuma Az, I found many people planted various forms of Opuntias under and around the windows of the house.
This was a very good deterrent to the unwanted temporay house guest while you were at work or out shopping.

That's the reason they use "Mexican Fence Posts" to keep people out of the property!

I knew this lady, and when she had kids she planted little cacti under their windows. When the kids were about 12 and ready to sneak out the cactus were growing huge and stopped them from climbing out their windows.
I thought that was funny, and always kept it in mind fro when i have kids of my own.
Then again, what if you have a fire, and the only way out is through a cactus blocked window? ouch...
I might just be a figment of my own imagination

I've heard it said that there are two really good ways to deter burglars:

1) Get a big dog.
2) Plant cholla underneath the windows.

According to the police around here, those are two things that theives will not risk messing around with.

The best guard dog is a German Shepard. Not only are the good watchdogs, but people tend to associate them with the police.

You could always plant an O. microdiasis then hook up a motion sensor on a blower motor behind the bush, pointing up. Anyone who approaches the window from the outside gets a faceful of Opuntia glochids as a first warning!

Yep, got a poodle but I do have one that will stand his ground. He's half Rott and half red heeler. He is very, very protective.
