New Matucana's

Post by DaveW »

Most Matucana's have a large zygomorphic hummingbird pollinated flower like Matucana krahnii below.

However there are some recent discoveries in the Matucana oreodoxa group that have a regular insect pollinated flower. One of the new ones is Matucana oreodoxa ssp, roseiflora, described in Cactus Explorer magazine if I remember correctly:-

There is also another recent discovery with a larger red flower with a white centre named Matucana oreodoxa ssp. rebutiiflora (note two "I's" since it often gets mistakenly written "rebutiflora"), because the flower was thought to resemble a Rebutia, however my plant is too small to flower yet. so see the link below:-

Matucana oreodoxa was described as long ago as 1986, but most other related insect pollinated rotate flowered Matucana's have only just started to be found.

I suppose the other regular flowered insect pollinated Matucana that belongs here is Matucana aureiflora, described even earlier in 1965.
