My small, beginner's collection
My small, beginner's collection
I've recently gotten back into growing cacti/succulents. Here's my very small collection of adult plants so far:
Copiapoa barquitensis
Top view of the flower
Rebutia kupperiana
Gymnocalycium ragonesei - buds!
Gymnocalycium bruchii - I received this little one last November with a bud that flowered for me. I immediately made it go into winter rest mode with no light or water. I didn't think it would flower for me this year, but here it is, with five buds.
Sulcorebutia pulchra
Mammillaria duwei
Euphorbia obesa (male)
I also have some assorted seedlings growing, but most of them are still in their bags, so I won't be taking any pictures of them until they're out.

Re: My small, beginners collection
nice collection you got going here shimaza1.
I think the second gymnocalycium is a bruchii not baldianum.

Thank you!
You might be right. The ebay seller had it listed as baldianum, but the flower is a light pink instead of the deepr pink/reds I seem to see on other people's cacti. I went and looked up bruchii, and the flower color looks a lot closer, but the spines seem more dense on them than they do on mine. Could it be a mix between the two?

Spines on G. bruchii can vary quite a bit. I also think it's bruchii.

Good to know. I'll have to write up a new label.
I purchased a few other cacti from the same seller - are any of the others improperly ID'ed?

My G bruchii started to flower today.
One of the offsets has a couple buds forming, too. Does keeping the offsets on the mother plant hurt it in any way?

Re: My small, beginner's collection
The G. bruchii looks great, and I'd say the ID is confirmed - typical bruchii flowers.
The last one looks too stout to be a pure E. chamaecereus - probably one of the many hybrids of that species.

That's because I mislabeled it - it's a Chamaelobivia "Rose Quartz". Thanks for pointing it out!

Many different hybrids have been sold under that name by unscrupulous vendors, but that one could be a genuine "Rose Quartz" clone - it looks about right.

Re: My small, beginner's collection
My Rebutia kupperiana started blooming despite the gross, Michigan "spring" weather we've been having.
I see a few more buds coming in, so I'm excited to see those come into bloom, too.

Nice! Rebutias are native to high elevations, cold doesn't bother them.

Re: My small, beginner's collection
Interesting! I have a Gymnocalycium ragonesei that has had buds for a while now. In fact, the flowers appeared to be ready to open when the temp plummeted and the rain/cloudy weather came. Now, they've been stuck in a slightly open state for over a week. Is this because of the cold/lack of sun?

Re: My small, beginner's collection
Yes, Gymnocalyciums like hot weather. My G. anisitsii always has buds on it, but they do nothing until the weather warms - haven't grown a bit yet this Spring.

I have more flowers blooming.
Mammillaria duwei Euphorbia obesa - not the prettiest flowers, but I appreciate them anyway. I also acquired more cacti:
Eriosyce napina Epithelantha micromeris Frailea grahliana Copiapoa laui
