I took the photo of Discocactus placentiformis v latispinus f major HU640 in this morning.
I bought seeds and sowed in 2007.

Seedlings of obregonia denegrii have grown slowly.
I sowed seeds on 9th August 2013.
It has survived more than 100 seedlings.
The photo is some of them.
They are in 5 cm square tubes.

My greenhouses are almost full but I have still been chasing 2 species.
One is Astrophytum asterias cv miracle kabuto and the other is Ariocarpus retusus v furfuraceus cv Suguri cauliflower.

I bought 20 seeds of the Ariocarpus and sowed on 11th August 2005.
I grafted young seedlings on H. Jusbertii stocks to collect seed earlier but I could make just 2 scions.
One of them showed the evidence of "cauliflower" but the other did not show at all.
I crossed these 2 and collected seeds.
The photo is the current appearance of with "evidence", 20 cm in diameter.
I degrafted this in September this year.


I got Pereskiopsis stocks in 2008.
Since scions grafted on Pereskiopsis grow very quick, almost all Ariocarpus will be in flower in 2nd autumn when they are 1 years old.
This allowed me to make a quick cycle of the pollination.
I grafted 24 seedlings every year.
I found a good one sown seed on 3rd September 2011.
The current appearance of the one, 17 cm in diameter.


I crossed "evidence one" and "good one" continuously.
The photos are degrafted ones showing cauliflower gene.
I sowed seeds on 19th July 2015 and degrafted in September this year.
They are around 12 cm in diameter.




I have kept 24 of grafted scions, 1 year old.
18 scions were grafted 2 days ago and 6 more have to be done soon.

Since I expected to need 10 years at least, it was a reasonable period, I think.
It takes 2 years from the germination to the flower even if seedlings were grafted.
5 generations are required 10 years.

A problem is my age.
I am old enough and I can not to do so much from now.

Obregonia denegrii is not difficult to propagate from seed.
It is just grow slowly but tolerates against to dry/wet conditions and so it is hard to kill.
Seedlings will turn their body color to brownish and stop growing when sunlight was too strong.

I recommend you also to try.

I bought seeds and sowed on 28th September 2005.
The photo is current ones, in 9 cm square pots.


I also harvested seeds from my own cacti and sowed on 13th November 2012.
The photo is seedlings, just before 1st repotting.
The photo was taken on 18th February 2014.


Repotted seedlings were kept under soft sunlight.
The photo was taken on 3rd August 2016, just before the repotting.
There were no seedlings loss since 1st repotting.

The photo is seedlings after repotting into 5 cm square tubes.
These seedlings are same as ones posted on 10th in this month.

I would love to try them from seed but due to my job i have to be away for a while every year so i cannot currently make a ling time commitment. I will however have a try at batch of seeds.

Miracle kabuto:

A Japanese cactus nursery man found an asterias showing very thick flecking over the body in imported asterias in 1870s.
It was crossed with other imported asterias.
Since the gene of the flecking was not so positive, he could not see any evidence on 1st filial seedlings.

These 1st filial seedlings were given to 3 experts of asterias growing.
They crossed with various asterias and picked up the gene of the flecking.
They named this asterias as miracle kabuto.
Japanese asterias growers do not graft seedlings and so they spent years for the developing.

Since a F1 Calles kabuto was crossed with during developing, the miracle kabuto reaches to a large size, more than 20 cm in diameter.

I bought 80 of miracle kabuto seeds and sowed on 17th October 2003.
The germination rate was not too bad but I could not see any true miracle kabutos at all.

I also bought 30 seeds and sowed on 17th September 2004.
20 seedlings were grafted on Hylocereus stocks.
They were in flower in 2006.
I found only one true miracle kabuto and all others were dream kabutos.
I assumed dream kabutos were crossed with during developing process.

My developing was stared by dream kabuto x miracle kabuto.

I can cross miracle kabuto x miracle kabuto and can harvest seeds currently.
Seedlings are:
40% true miracle kabuto
40% dream kabuto
20% akebono han (Gene problem caused by hybridizations)

Young seedlings do not show the evidence of "miracle" and so you have to keep all seedlings for a while.
3 years old seedlings start to show the evidence and you can start to select.
White lines along areoles are evidence of true miracle kabuto.

You do not know when the mutation of flecking starts.
It will happen on each plant with different timings.
The photo shows the staring of mutation.
The cactus is 5 years old.
