Summers almost over here and we have a heat wave over 100F ( 38C) today and lows about 80F (27C). I have my first Ariocarpus fissuratus flower bud. I have some winter growers to look at soon, Dudleya and conophytum . We really don't have much of a winter here in Ventura Co. its really like a spring when the rains come and the native plants wake up . Probably the same were you are ?

Yes it is very similar climate with 6 months shifting.
It will reach 21 'C today.
Hottest day will be a bit over 40 C', between Christmas and New Years days.

I plant dry climate tolerate shrubs in my front yard.
They are in flower now.
The photo is Emu Bush and Rosemary.

Which aloe is that in the front right?
There is no cactus you can't eat, but you just might regret it if you eat the wrong one.

Nic

I am actually not familiar with aloe species.
I got a small unnamed plant in 15 cm pot and planted it in my front yard in 2008.
You may be able to tell the name.
The height, from ground to top of flowers is about 1.5 m.

I have tried to minimize grafted cacti and have degrafted quite many.
The photo is large Ariocarpus.
16 of them are under rooting after degrafted in this spring.

Good morning Frank,

these plants are so unique that they do not have to bloom at all.
The sensation is their appearance!

Best wishes

K.W.

Hello Frank,

a few days ago I returned from a month long vacation to visit my family in Germany. So I did not have a chance to take a look at your latest posts.
Well, on September 21st you posted two images, one a pretty Astrophytum asterias cv. superkabuto and the other one a truly stunning cactus with fuzzy white surface and a very pretty bi-colored pink and ivory flower. What kind of cactus is that?
I only do have now one cactus with white spines and a pink flower (Thelocactus mcdowellii). That is a beautiful plant. I used to have a small plant of Mammillaria humboldtii, which did have very dense, pectinate spines and also a cute pink blossom. That plant, however, somehow had disappeared, when I tried to locate it in the spring. I am not sure, if it rotted and dried up, or if it was dug up by those nasty curve-billed thrasher birds.
Now I wonder, what the plant is called, that you pictured and if it would be possible for me to buy one or more of them and cultivate them outdoors.
Most likely, it will not be tough enough to survive our winters though.

G'day Harald,

The cactus you mentioned is Pelecyphora aselliformis.
Although P. aselliformis is easy to germinate from seed but it is not easy to manage seedlings.
Seedlings keep very thin bodies and it is hard to make a good shape.

I graft seedlings and make thick bodies and degraft them after that.
The rooting of P. asellifoemis is very easy.

The next photo is rooted P. aslliformis.

Hot summer will be soon.
Mid of 30 C' will continue for 1 week from tomorrow.

My small greenhouse was covered over by 50% shade cloth yesterday evening.
I will start the covering for large greenhouse this evening.

The photo is the small greenhouse covered by shade cloth.

Great looking plants! I would like to have hot weather like you have, but live near the ocean and the summer temperature hardly ever gets above 90F.
