My small collection (so far) - with pix

Post by thomas »

Here are a few pictures of my small collection that I have right now. I seem to be adding to it almost weekly. Must be some sort of addition (CSAD - cactus succulent acquisition disorder).

They are kept in full sun. Sun usually starts showing on them at about 9am (in my back yard) and lasts until around 8pm. They seem to like it so far.

Very nice collection and it's very well manicured. I need to stop acquiring plants and get my existing collection cleaned up and tagged as nicely as yours.

Vipassana: Thanks for reply. I guess i'm a little OCD and like to keep them in neat order <G>. I seem to acquire at least 2 plants a week so far but like to keep it small so I can enjoy each plant and their shapes/peculiarities. I'm envious of those that have hundreds of plants and still need to add Astro's and Lophophora to my collection. I really love the looks of them but have so far been unable to find any in my area.

My absolute favorite guy hands down is miles Anderson with miles2go.com But he wont have any lophs for you. You can try eBay for both. One guy I like is dubenkactus he is in Czechoslovakia I think but he has a cites certified nursery(legally import) and will provide photo sanitary certificates to you. I have picked up a number of astrophytums from him for as little as .99 cents for an astrophytum myriostigma. As for looks you should try the seed list aiko maintains I think he has mixed look sees from either his own plants or kws, both have sown very well for me and the one look i grafted last year had a flower bud on it last I saw. Unfortunately I'm likely to miss the first thing I ever grew from seed to flower (even if I cheated with a graft) because I am 1000 miles away from my collection visiting family. Nice collection! Mine is not near as well kept as yours is.

Thanks george76904 for the info and I will check out those sites. I know the Lophs are hard to come by (for obvious reasons <G>) but I sure do like the looks of them. Same goes with the astrophytums. I've never tried grafting but just may some day.
I've always had cacti or succulents around but this is the first year I've decided to build a collection. I'm 66yrs old and semi-retired so need something to "play with". I really enjoy them and go out and look and check them out daily.

My Echinopsis is budding up nicely and I hope it wont be too long until it flowers. I know this plant likes to bloom at night which is no problem for me as I usually don't go to bed until about 3:30-4:00am. Can't wait...Hopefully I will get some pictures.
I just checked it tonight and the buds have doubled in size and plumped up. I'm excited.

This is my first Stenocereus. Are they slow or fast growers?

From my experience with them they are relatively fast.

I've added a new addition to my collection - a Gasteraloe that looks really nice and is pretty good size. I posted in the succulent
section to find out which one it is and hope I get a reply. My SMALL collection seems to keep growing on a weekly basis so it must be a case of SCAD (succulent cactus acquisition disorder} and I'm not minding a bit. I'm envious of those that have a fantastic collection of cacti and succulents.
