Please explain the difference between "monstrose" and "crist

Post by David48 »

When I began collecting, in the 1960s, I was familiar with cristate forms, but I do not believe I heard of the term "monstrose". Now, returning to the hobby in 2016, I find both terms are out there. Please can someone inform me of how these terms differ, and what causes them?

Crested cacti are ones that have a single growth point but it is stretched. It is technically a monstrose variety. Monstrose is any plant that does not fit the normal plant characteristics. Some of them like cereus peruvianus monstrose have many growth points, without clean ribs, and spination variation.
