EPI-DEMIC?

Post by Tiggy »

My collection of Epiphyllums just seems to keep on growing, I am now struggling to find room for them all, and if that's not enough there are also some stems that broke off which I planted and even they are flowering.

I love these plants but it's becoming very difficult to find any space for the my other plants that need over-wintering in the greenhouse. Having said that, I am now looking to getting hold of a yellow/lemon one for next year.

Oh my gosh, Susi! Gorgeous flowers! I'm in the same situation with my cactus/succulent collection--no room and stuff that I'm DYING to have. And trying to expand my Christmas cactus and EPI collection. I just love those colorful blooms. But I'm ashamed to say that I can't grow a Christmas cactus to save my life. It's supposed to be the easiest cactus to grow, but they either rot or fall apart on me.
Once bitten by the cactus collecting/growing bug, there is no known cure!

Thank you.
Mine are planted in an orchid mix (mainly bark) being as they naturally grow on the trees it seemed the most logical. During the summer they are outside under a shelter where they get mainly shade from a fig tree above but some morning filtered sunshine. I spray them every day and keep them reasonably damp but not wet wet. Being in this mix the water drains through very quickly. When the temps. start dropping too much at night (which is quite early as we are high up on a mountain) I move them into the greenhouse underneath the shelves so they don't get direct light. Then when the buds start forming I move onto the shelf but not in too much direct sun. My greenhouse is covered with double plastic so it cuts a lot of the suns damaging rays, but the temp. during the day rises immensely (into the forties if I don't open it). I always keep a high humidity, can't see a thing in there if I keep my glasses on. Moving them does not cause the buds to drop as many people seem to think, it's changing their environment that causes this, which is why I make sure that they are nicely settled in there before the buds start forming. I have a tube heater which keeps the temps from falling too low at night. Hope this helps

So pretty! I'm recently obsessed with thanksgiving/christmas cacti. I bought a pink one from home depot for super cheap and in the car on the way home my sisters dog knocked off some branches, so I read about how to propagate them and now I have about 6 lil ones. My mom also gave me a cutting from her white one. I want every colour >=)

How many times have I knocked them over whilst trying to move around in my tiny greenhouse? You are right though kikithor, they are rather addictive. I started with one that a friend of mine gave to our daughter, who very kindly totally neglected it. When she moved into her own place she left it behind and in a very sad state. Took a while and plenty of TLC but eventually it turned into a nice healthy specimen and never fails with the flowers. I also have lots of new plants just starting from when I re-potted this year. I split them up as they were becoming rather large and I it is easier for me to arrange smaller pots in the greenhouse than large ones as at this time I have quite a lot of large plants in there and it's a constant battle trying to make space for them all. Luckily, I now have two outdoor shelters for the hardier plants, but I still seem to run out of room every year #-o You can see the shelters and more photos on my "Tiggy" page on fb which I created just for my own interests.
