The surgery is open...
The surgery is open...
Drat. I'm on travel and my neighbor texted me news that my largest Cleistocactus straussii (about 2m tall), admittedly under potted at this stage, blew over in a storm and fragmented. Drat.

I'll grow it as long as it doesn't have glochids. Gaudy flowers a plus.

Aw... what a shame! I hope I never run into this issue!

That sucks but doesn't look too bad the top can be cut off but you have plenty of pups that will give you a nice clump.
I've had whole benches of cactus blow over in wind storms. it always sucks and is inconvenient and makes me wonder why bother ?

Re: The surgery is open...
The combination of cold winter climates with many dull days and the need to use greenhouses avoids these sorts of thing. At least no wind gets to the plants. My old greenhouse has survived many storms and protected my plants very well. Better move away from that warm sunny climate of yours and live somewhere cold...!
(I do have dismembered some plant parts by dropping the plants myself, though...)

I've removed the massive central column, replanted the pot, and I'm back in business.
I segmented the central column, and with the broken tip, they're curing for future rooting.

Re: The surgery is open...
Good idea marking the bottoms.

I'll take a piece if you don't have a place to put it...
Been trying to find a C. straussii for over a year now. I don't, for the life of me, understand why tall columulars (like Pilocereus)are more popular than shorter ones like Cleistocactus or Haageocereus. It makes no sense to me.

Graffiti--it's in big box stores here in California quite frequently. Usually small plants 2-4" tall, but it grows rapidly.
If you want me to buy/ship you such plants, message me. You have PayPal?

Re: The surgery is open...
I was mostly joking. I have an Espostoa lanata that's similar enough where I'm not worried. I just find it odd that nobody seems to have them. C&D, Mesa, Arid Lands, M2G, nobody seems to stock them. Even Altman's doesn't seem to keep stock even through they have a huge stand of them according to Daiv's pics on this site.
And I'm not even picky, I'd take C. straussii, ferrarii, ritteri, sepium, basically any of the columular (non sprawling) white fuzzy ones. I may hit you up this spring, as I do have paypal, and would like to replace the one I had as a little kid.
