I posted this on another thread but it fits here also. I thought the buds would fall off since it's so late but at last one is open now, for the 3rd day. Happy Dance!!

Winter time with strong winds and temps about 90F and maybe 10% humidity , some Winter wheres el nino?? Did some light watering of the cactus. I find Turbinicarpus ysabelae somewhat difficult to keep alive though easy from seeds. I think it needs a acidic compost which is what I'm trying now, tends to get orange rot on the body not the roots werid. Mammillaria sancez-mejoradae typical hard core desert cactus needing little to no water in Winter and a mineral soil. I rotted off my big one but more my carelessness than anything else. typical rots from the roots.

Another early bloomer Mammillaria roseocentra from Mesa gardens, I think is also called Mammillaria magallanii . For me easier to grow than Mammillaria lasiacantha.

Nice collection Keith. Do you find any advantages to the square pots? I also have a mix of them. I had a couple of rot issues this summer while trying to learn watering habits for certain species while also trying out some soil mixes. Latest rot was found on one of my Copiapoa hypogaea, tap root seems ok but lost more than half of the top part. With our So. Cal heat I moved my collection to my East facing side of the yard so morning to noon sun is plentiful and 80 to 90 degrees +/- F. shade for the rest of the day. Which direction do you face your shaded benches?

Cheers.

The small square pots are rose pots I like them because they are deeper than normal square pots. I often grow cactus that have taproots. I face my benches south and use 50% shade cloth. My small seedlings get double 50% which is IDk ~ 75% ?

I just end up with more cactus than space in the benches, So a few cactus get full sun and often get white color patches on the ribs because of too much sun. I try and shade them from afternoon sunlight especially this time of year as the sun gets lower but is still strong. I try and shade then by putting them under potted jade plants, or the east side of a plastic chair, post that holds up patio cover, etc.

I rot a few cactus every year so I'm using more pumice less dirt. With all the pumice the water runs straight out the bottom of the pot which is good , makes a mess but thats OK.
