Mammillaria from AZ

Post by keith »

Mammillaria grahamii/mammillaria microcarpa, Arizona fishhook cactus. This is a higher elevation type from around Boyce Thomson arboretum the ones found in Phoenix get taller with paler flowers. very common in Arizona. Likes heat and flowers in the middle of the monsoon so around August in AZ. Fewer flowers in cold California. Doesn't like full sunlight which is werid comming from Arizona were it's sunny even in the shade , reflected light.

Better picture. Double potted adds more circumference so I don't get hooked by this plant when picking it up. Someday all the stems will bloom.

Originally from near superior AZ collected as a small uprooted plant. They are very common around low bushes there and many other places in AZ. They grow taller in Phoenix with lighter flowers. I don't think they range as far north as Payson AZ ? too cold probably.

Sorry for the horrible photo, but would this guy be of the same species but with different flower color? Or is another species (which one?)?

Could it be Mammillaria mazatlanensis? Looks like mine, although mine had darker stems. Hard to get an idea of size from your pic. Sue

I'm not able to differentiate Mammillaria grahamii/mammillaria microcarpa from Mammillaria mazatlanensis.

Maybe next time it blooms I try a better pic to post here :)

Anyway, the flowers of mine are of different colors.

Mine was recently bought in a supermarket...

Nice M. grahamii they like that heat thats for sure. I used to see them on ray rd in Ahwatukee right along the road cut. Another nice mammillaria M albicans which flowers easier for me in CA than grahamii.

A well-known member in our local C&S club here in Phoenix, Doug Dawson, showed me two rescue M. grahamii that he collected from a development area near Tucson (grounds were being bulldozed for homes). One had brilliant pure white flowers and the other had white with pink stripes. He is currently working on getting seed from them, which I REALLY want. I've only ever seen bright and pale pinks.

On a related note, my father has some land in east Tucson and Mammillaria grow like weeds there. They can be found every 2-3 feet under every bush and next to every rock. I will search every foot of that place during bloom season looking for flower color variation next time I'm down there.
