Discocactus surprise!

Post by BarryRice »

I was working outside when I noticed something surprising in the kitchen window... One of my Discocactus placentiformis plants decided to flower. It's amazing how fast surprises can burst out of the cephalium!

I'll grow it as long as it doesn't have glochids. Gaudy flowers a plus.

stunning. If only I had more space for some discocacti.
And as the walls come down and as I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade recalling all of the times
I have died and will die.
It's all right.
I dont mind
I dont mind.

I grow these guys outside, year round, in light shade, bringing them inside only for the winter cold season.

I wish I had that option, substantially colder and wetter over here in Wales. I have put a few outside this year some less valuable ones to test the weather, so for my opuntia, tephrocactus, and mammillaria are coping but my ferocactus looks like its dying got proper sunburnt but still new spines growing on its so maybe not.

Aren't these some of the most amazing cacti? I've lost the two I had; they seemed quite easy to flower. I must get more this year.

I wish I had been able to keep mine alive for more than two years. I remember the same feeling of surprise when a bud appeared and opened--all within 12-14 hours. I'd never seen anything happen that fast in the cactus world.
