Windowsill and patio growing
Re: Windowsill and patio growing
This year I started using Algoplus (Algoflash) 5N.7P.5K Cactus Formula liquid fertilizer, which contains magnesium and micro-nutrients, on all of my windowsill/patio Cacti and Euphorbia's. I think that has resulted in more bountiful flowers typified by this very large flower bud cluster on one of my Arrojadoa dinae:
Growing in 2¾" (7cm) square plastic pot -- 60% washed coarse pumice/40% washed
and screened coir -- outdoors on patio shelving under 30% shade cloth

Impressive! Don't the Arrojadoa usually flower in the winter?

Re: Windowsill and patio growing
They flower year round here with the most profuse flowering being in our early spring. In habitat (N. E. Brazil) they do not experience temperatures much below 60°F (approx. 16°C) -- they do not require a winter cold resting period in order to produce flowers the following spring (that is one reason I favor them). Dormancy for them results from the very dry conditions they experience during that time in their habitat.Mark wrote:Impressive! Don't the Arrojadoa usually flower in the winter?

Tristan, who grows his plants outdoors at his house in Phoenix, has posted pics of Arrojadoa multiflora & penicillata currently in flower in his thread (Minime8484's C&S Collection - 2015).

Re: Windowsill and patio growing
Fantastic all, James!
I'm definitely going to order some of that fertilizer you mentioned.
I assume it's not sold in stores. Really reasonable price online anyhow.

Re: Windowsill and patio growing
As far as I know it is not available in stores in Arizona yet, Tristan. I buy mine online from Amazon -- inexpensive and quick delivery. It was developed and sold originally in Germany (the label on my first purchase was in German). I also have substituted their Tomato fertilizer (4N 6P 8K with micro-nutrients) with equal success -- less expensive and much larger quantity (1 liter).Minime8484 wrote:Fantastic all, James!

Re: Windowsill and patio growing
Evidently Amazon no longer offers AlgoPlus/Algoflash fertilizers (my last order from Amazon was in May of this year). AlgoPlus/Algoflash now sell their products direct via their web site: http://www.algoplus.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Re: Windowsill and patio growing
And another great windowsill miniature flower bud cluster: Discocactus araneispinus (sensu lato):
Growing in 2¾" (7cm) square plastic pot - 60% washed coarse pumice/40%
washed and screened coir - outdoors on patio shelving under 30% shade cloth

Just about out of flower bud cluster pics -- Discocactus crystallophilus:

Re: Windowsill and patio growing
Dear James,
the flowers cut me out of my shoes.
Very, very nice!
I have used the differnt Algoflash fertilizer of Compo for years.
For my cacti tomato fertilizer and fertilizer for flowering plants.
Compo has abandoned the Algoflash series. They have a new cactus fertilizer 5-5-7.
Unfortunately, the tomato fertilizer NK 3-5 contains no phosphorus.
I have to look for a new thing. The Cactus fertilizer is too expensive for me. I need 1 to 1.5 liters at each watering.
Kind regards and best wishes
K. W.

Thank you K.W.Very, very nice!
Ah yes, fertilizer cost is always a very important consideration for those with large collections (and commercial growers). I only have to purchase sufficient quantities to satisfy my windowsill/patio and front garden patch plants growing at my town home. Dan Bach fertilizes my plants staged in his nursery greenhouses via his injector system gratis. How fortunate I am to have such a great friend!...........
