Peter's 2015

Post by peterb »

Hello! I don't think I kept up much with posting pics of plants here last year. I started graduate school and bought a house and I'm helping raise a 6 year old, so I probably won't be very consistent this year either. But I have had two flowering plants already in late Jan/early Feb, growing outside here in Chandler AZ. The nights have been cool, about 48F or so I guess. Days 68-78. Very pleasant.

Surprised that Strombo disciformis is flowering, but not as surprised by Gymnocactus ysabelae as it usually flowers early.

Looking forward to a great year growing. I'm growing a few flats of Baja cacti at the greenhouse at Arizona State, for research purposes, so that should be fun.

Great!
I didn't know the ysabelae flowers that early at the year. Mine didn't flowered at all.
Maybe they require some water at this time if the temperatures are fine for them.
And again I've learned something new. Thanks!

I spent the day yesterday grooming and inspecting and repotting and so on. I also built a make shift shade thing, as the plants were starting to get roasted in the climbing sun already. It is really spring here, with yesterday's high of almost 80. The cooler weather burst growers will kick in any time. Buds on all the Echinofossulocactus and the Pediocactus winkleri, etc. If you want ID on anything just ask. Some of the small ones don't look like much but they're my babies from seed. I'm especially proud that the Austrocactus patagonicus is still alive. It hates Phoenix. :-)

Hi Peter very nice. I hope you plan to build a sturdier shade house in the future. I used to live in Phoenix and when the Moonson comes your shade house will blow away. I've lost too many cactus to wind both in Phoenix and especially Moorpark CA.

In Phoenix I made a simple shade house using these piers and 4x4's then added 2x4 across the top. I went to Arizona Bag to get shade cloth remnants I think 50% worked pretty good. Get a staple gun works great for attaching shade cloth to wood. Looks like you have lots of room to make a pretty nice set-up and then you can really go crazy get too many cactus and we can trade plants. :D

Hi! Yes, it is just temporary. It faces south, so I know those haboobs are on the way and would make mincemeat out of the flimsy setup. Good idea to use those piers. It's a project for a little later this month.

I'm curious to the name of the plant in picture #4. It sure is spiny!

Thanks!

Peter,

It's picture #004.JPG, located directly above my entry.

BTW, I really like Mammillaria estebanensis in the last set of pictures you posted. I need to get one of those!
