Re: Arjen's 2014
Thats an incredible show of colour that. Your greenhouse or nursery must be a riot of colour right now.
Ever thought of taking a picture of parts of your collection . Always nice to see the plants together doing their stuff.
I do like seeing overall pics.

I've run out of glowing adjectives to describe what I see here, Arjen. So I'll just say, let the wild Technicolor display continue!
Catch a falling star--but don't try it with a cactus!

What a stunning series of photos/plants! Simply amazing!
I especially love the Weingartia tarabucoensis var. callecallensis - I had no idea Weingartia flowers were so diverse!

Hello Arjen,
I agree, that your Weingartia collection is amazing. Some of the color combinations are almost "out of this world"!
But I also admire that nice Strombocactus disciformis plant and all the others that you are showing. I do have a large clump of Echinopsis eyriesii with a lot of flower buds, but it will take a few more weeks before that one will be in full bloom. Also, I like the Echinocereus scheerii var. gentryi. I have tried to grow that plant twice and failed both times. I believe, the cactus was subjected to too much sun and heat the first time around. Then I planted it in semi-shade and it seemed to be doing better. However, at one time I found it lying on its side. A curve-billed thrasher, which is a good-sized black bird had the idea of uprooting the cactus. Unfortunately, I had not found out about the plant lying on the ground for several days. It was dehydrated and the roots were shriveled up. Because it was a small plant
(2 inch pot) it did not recover. . However, I shall try again when I see this plant for sale.
Harald

Re: Arjen's 2014
thank you all for your kind comments
eutow, was that you in the comment on youtube?
harald, for me it actually all started with E. eyriesii, I was on holiday in bayern and the lady we rented an apartment from had a huge basket of these in flower. I thought that was so impressive, that I asked her for a cutting.
that was my very first cactus, I of course killed it along the way, but really needed to have it in my collection later on, someone was friendly enough to give me a new cutting.
the flower you see here is actually my very first own eyriesii flower, after 11 years of collecting cacti.
it's a shame you live in the US, I can easily spare a small cutting of E. scheerii ssp. gentryi (they clump like crazy), perhaps I can send it to an address in germany for you?

Re: Arjen's 2014
Arjen, while reviewing the photos of your incredible collection, I remember two things I want to mention. That "ethereal" bloom on the S. mirabilis (here it's classified as Echinopsis) is quite unlike anything else. Mine did not make through this winter, but I have many seeds from the past pods and have sown more. I know it'll be years before any reach blooming stage, but it's nice to know they are self-regenerating. Secondly, I've ordered a Rebutia mentosa which should be here any day now. I assume it's exactly the same cactus as your Weingartia mentosa , and I was wondering if there are any special cultural notes I should be aware of to raise it successfully.
Catch a falling star--but don't try it with a cactus!
Re: Arjen's 2014
agavask not right now, no. maybe at some point later on..
fanaticactus, yes, setiechinopsis is here classified as echinopsis. do sow those seeds, and do so every year when you have a fresh batch, the plants are short lived.
as for W. mentosa: although weingartia and sulcorebutia were once lumped into rebutia, that didn't mean that that made any sense at all...
I can confirm that this is the same plant, you could also call it Sulcorebutia mentosa, view some of my earlier posts to see more about current nomenclature or read the article by Ritz et. al
I grow these plants in the greenhouse in sunny conditions, that is, my greenhouse is screened off against too much sun by using a special paint.
My soil mix consists of 1/6 garden soil, 1/6 coco peat, 1/3 smallest size pebbles, 1/3 flugsand/bims/pumice whichever name it has in the US
I water it like any other Weingartia and most other cacti, and fertilize thrice each year.
