Cacti from Slovenia
Re: Cacti from Slovenia
I am so happy, happy, happy ..... finally, after several years of inappropriate conditions in which my cacti have to live, today I saw buds in my Echinofossulocactus albatus.... wheeey! I hope others Echinofossulus will follow, too.
In general, spring is coming also to my GH, there are some new spines and some buds on Astros. Well, after all, there were after 30 deg.C in GH for some hours these days ....

Re: Cacti from Slovenia
Today I visited a friend who has a cacti nursery. He was throwing away cacti which he couldn`t sell anymore, becouse they weren`t "beautiful" enough.
This is what I have adopted, becouse I really don`t mind if they have some spots or some visual mistake:
And then I saw that there were a lot of cacti on the compost, so I picked some of them, too:
Maybe some will grow, some will die, but I will try to revitalize as more as it would be possible.

You have such a nice collection, I was looking at your facebook albums as well
Re: Cacti from Slovenia
CarefreeHWY, thank you. Unfortunately many ot those on FB are no longer alive, becouse till this winter I didn`t have a GH and they didn`t have suitable conditions for growth. But I am trying and I hoper this year I will have a courage to buy some special things, too.
Maja, if you are gonna to be a good girl, you will get some, too!

Re: Cacti from Slovenia
Oh my diddy days !
Now thats rescuing on a massive level.
I remember the days when I used to go down John Pilbeam's throwaway bag in the 90's. Most took many years to outgrow their cold spider mite or mealy damage. Apart from Gymnocalycium Intermedium Pil 118 . Of which I noticed wasn't a name in use in the revised cactus Lexicon.
I'm confused.
Several years ago he lobbed out a dozen Echeveria Cuspidata Zaragozae onto a pile of dirt in the long grass , i'll never be rid of them now. A Rebutia Buiningiana of which has grown fastly and produced many babies since 2011
And a very slow Gymnocalycium Achirasence Chacrasense. Of which I watered like bollux last year.
A Chamaelobivia that was looking pretty awful, and recovered and grew fantastically, to flower and looked to be Chamaelobivia so named after himself.
.
Don't think I could cope with a vast haul of rescues like you just got in. I start mine small

Well, this rescue missions.... usually is like that - I feel sorry for all discarded plant so I adopt them. Then, when I have to repot them, I feel sorry for myself becouse I did that and I decide that I will never do that again.... but next time the story repeats, hi hi.....
Maybe some plants will survive, some won`t.... generally plant are ok, they are just totally dried up. Now they are already repoted (I will post a picture) and maybe this weekend they will get some water, depends on weather forecast.
Two years ago I got a lot of plants in even worse condition. Last spring I had to throw away quite a lot of them, but those who stay are very beautiful now.
I have quite a lot of free space im my GH for now, so I can afford such rescue missions.

Re: Cacti from Slovenia
Space Always the issue! And we're going to fill it, one way or another, so "rescues" are a (relatively) cheap way to do it! As you said, Simona -- nothing to lose.
Once bitten by the cactus collecting/growing bug, there is no known cure!
There's no 12 step programme for Cactaholics...so I shall just have to get some more!!

Hello!
Spring is finally peeking in my GH:
Do you think this two need to be repoted? Some new cacti Not identical twins:
Repoted:
Well, it looks like I will really have to give my camera fixed, becouse cacti season is almost here!

Re: Cacti from Slovenia
Simona - @ repotting: You've achieved a new definition: when square pots become rhomboid! Are those all your new "freebees"? You probably acquired $300 worth of plants! Also I really like those heavy duty "carrying" trays! I've never seen those in U.S. It would make my 30 minute plant-carrying to the roadside stand a lot quicker.
