Minime8484's C&S Collection - 2014

Post by Minime8484 »

It's time to start a new year of plant & flower posts! Actually, I'm a little behind as things started blooming in my yard about 2 weeks ago!

Here are the ones popping up so far.

My Mammillaria decipiens var. camptotricha was the first to start blooming earlier this month; it's tailing off now, and was tough to photograph in the dappled light.

My Agave potatorum started growing the bloom stalk on October 3, 2013, but the first flower opened just this weekend; stalk is just over 20 ft tall. No pups, so I hope it makes a lot of bulbils!

No Winter in Chandler, is it?

I have an Agave potatorum too. But mine is soooooooo small. I have it in 4" pot. I don't think it will ever flower.

Others are nice aswell.

Perhaps a little late to this, but that's not Mamm. microhelia. More Mamm. haageana ssp elegans. :)

Should be a great year for my Cleistocactus!

Today, two of my specimens of an undescribed taxon of Cleistocactus from La Paz, Bolivia opened their first blooms of the season.
Pictures simply cannot capture the color of the distal ends of the flowers of this species - it is a vibrant pinkish-purple that is set off from the reddish-orange remainder of the flower.

Add that to the beautiful dark brown spines, and this one is one of my favorites.

Hope to get seed this year!

Actually, your plant is Micranthocereus flaviflorus/M. flaviflorus var. densiflorus

Micranthocereus polyanthus is the Backeburg type plant (originally the E. Werdermann Cephalocereus polyanthus type plant) notable for it's pink flowers.

Attribution for the very floriferous cacti (for a period of several weeks in the mid-winter of our northern hemisphere) of this genus is often a problem for they are not often encountered in cultivation.

Excellent, James!
I have long thought that this had been misidentified. I got it ID'd as M. polyanthus, and didn't have any others of that species to compare to, nor did I have true M. flaviflorus; however, I have always noted that I suspected it was another species and probably M. flaviflorus!
Great to finally get confirmation!
Thanks so much!!
