Majcka 2014

Post by majcka »

Hi guys.

Time to start this years new topic. And I have something to show. That are my new members:

A lovely 10 years old Ferocactus herrerae:

And a little younger Ferocactus viridescens v. orcuttii from Las Palmas - well its parents were from there:

I think it is a nice thing to have a local Cactus&Succulent club. I can get nice new THINGS every month. Image

And this month we had a nice travel lecture from Baja California by a guy who were there in December 2012 with his friend from Phoenix. But it was just Part 1. I hardly wait for part 2.

I like your Ferros, especially the Herrerae. A rewarding genus, but it can be dangerous to repot them or even to handle them, their spines are like swords, be careful. I don’t mind repotting my plants; the only exceptions are Ferocactus and E. Grusonii. It’s indeed a nice thing to have a cactus club close where you live. Not only can you get nice new plants each month, you can also get rid of plants you don’t want anymore. I can’t do either, and that’s annoying sometimes. But you’re lucky. :D

I was in my GH today. This one is not for teasing those who have their beloved cacti in freezing GHs. I just wanted to say weather is really weird. At 2 p.m. today (January 12) it was 25deg C (77 F) in an open GH. Before I did a good aeration done it was almost 35deg C (95 F). It should be winter for crying out loud. ](*,)

And this one was already published, but I think I'm getting closer to handeling with my Nikon properly:

Some very nice looking Fero's there. Herrerae always looks so sculptural.

Yeah I got my seeds from Minime8484 above today too.

Be crazy to put them in right here right now at the moment. Way 2 nang, 2 kold and moist outside.
Think I might have to wait a couple of weeks yet, maybe three.

Put them under a energy saver bulb. Get the highest wattage you can find. I picked up morrisons own brand and they work really good. 1200 lumins per bulb and I use two. The give off just enough heat too. Pretty much 27-30c.

Well I hope you have good results with the seeds. And not too many problems trying to off load the hundreds of seedlings in a year or so.

For have a problem with too many seedlings I have to germinate them properly. I manage to kill many of them every time I try. But most resistant of them survives.

I think I will have to buy some with a label "Majckaproofe" 8)

Yeah I get that problem, my last batch I had about 200/300 seeds. That's whittled down to about 20 seedlings left. I just sown about 200 rebutia and 7 e.micromeris hopefully I'll do better with these. Anyway good luck and happy even if frustrating growing.
