Re: my collection so far....
I leave Echinocereus triglochidiatus inermis out in the rain and frost all winter here and I've never lost one. That also sped up their growth considerably. They don't grow in the winter, but as soon as they feel like waking up there is water available and they plump up.

Do you think the Echinocereus pulchellus would cope with the same treatment?promethean_spark wrote:I leave Echinocereus triglochidiatus inermis out in the rain and frost all winter here and I've never lost one. Also how wet are your winters? You live in a very different environments im quite further north than you.

Re: my collection so far....
I'm not sure about pulchellus, but your inermis look identical to mine.
We got 5 inches of rain in Dec, and the nightly lows were just above freezing. They see a few degrees of frost with damp soil. I have other NOID triglochidiatus looking plants that are also surviving those conditions. Other echinocereus (such as E. raichenbachii) are far less forgiving.
For the trigs at least it should be safe to water them lightly during winter when the temps are consistently above freezing.

Re: my collection so far....
We have had substantially more rain than that and a lot of days and worse nights well below 0°c. But at least it will take the spring and autum better.

I actually like the Ferocactus!
I am about to lose a Pseudolithos to rot. I cut a big hole in it to cut away the rotting tissue. But it will probably not help.

Kinda looks like a spikey snowball. The wierd thing is the Mammillaria polythele and rebutia heliosa in the same pot are fine so I put in their own separate pots on a higher shelf.

Re: my collection so far....
Watering season seems to have started. I have had temps up to about 20c in the green house over the last few days so decided to start watering. My ariocarpus plants all had a little sip to get things going and they seemed to perk up a bit, I will wait a while longer before watering the lophophoras, turbinicarpus, obregonia and astrophytums. I did give most of my south america cacti as quick spray too and all my echinocereus and mammillaria's had a bit of a soak so hopefully with the sun strong again today they will have sucked it all up and lost some of the shrivelled look. Winter is really starting to break now with much more sun and warmer nights with only light frosts which are not cold enough to penetrate the greenhouse now. Not long and all by seedlings will be put out in the g/h once I'm sure the brutal frosts are over. Hopefully I will not get any more losses, there is more ventilation now with the bubble wrap insulation layers removed from the green house just using a water proof cover over night now but that will be put away for the summer soon as well. Happy growing ahead.

Re: my collection so far....
New delivery today, got another obregonia denegrii. Also had to move the rest of my plants about to fit it in. Now all my plants and seedlings are either in the green house or outside on the windowsill. Lost another plant my echinocactus grusonii rotted away to mush so is now on the compost heap with the other casualties of the cold damp weather.

Re: my collection so far....
Its not the end of the world. It was quite a large cactus which I don't really have room for. Im looking for some more lophophora an alberto-vojtechii and koereshii may be a few duplicate arios then I'll be happy for a while until I can afford a proper greenhouse with more room.

Re: my collection so far....
Got my self a new plants kinda compensation for destroying those two succulents. Been fancying one of these for a few years but never came around one. surprisingly very luttle information about them on the web. I had to resort to geological surveys to find the local rock and soil types.
I will be repitting my uebelmannia pectinifera sion I think the pot is getting a bit tight. So will show sime pictures of the mineral mix I will use.
