Hi, Thanks for the comments.
majcka wrote:How old/big should that be to flower??? Does it do it in pots too???? I have one litle one just 10 cm high. I wonder if I'll ever get to see it bloom???? :-k
Hi majcka,
Mine flowered when they were in pots before I put them in the ground. They grow about 300mm (1 foot) every year here in the ground.
they have been in the ground about 5 years but were large cuttings when I got them off an elderly neighbour. The 'mother' plant is gone now. New owners who DIDN"T LIKE CACTUS!!! I was a bit sad to drive past and see a big gap where the 30 year old plant used to be but I'm glad I got some cuttings before my old neighbour passed away.
She said she rescued it from the front of a church she used to attend when it was going to be chopped down about 30 years ago.
promethean_spark wrote:Mine is in a pot about 60cm wide and 40cm tall, the plant itself is maybe 2m tall with 3 stems, and has been flowering since it was about 1.2m tall. I got it about 7 years ago when it was 50cm tall. Need to unpot that guy and put him in the ground somewhere before it weighs half a ton...
That sounds like mine before going in the ground.
I have an Echinopsis spachiana that has cracked a large ceramic pot in its efforts to get out. It took about 5 years to break the pot

It should have quite a few in a week or two.
I'll post some pics then.
Hey Larry!
Did you ever get a chance to take some more photos of the blooms?
Would love to see the plant in all its splendor! :D

Hi, I will get a photo tomorrow but it didn't produce many blooms at once.
The 'cutting' plant is still putting out a bloom every now and then also.

One of my feros is flowering and has more to come :)

How old is that plant, Lazz? Bought a big wisliz late last Summer, but I don't think it got established & we had/are having a Winter that's right @ it's lower limits. Even though under big 20" plastic pot, just looked @ it. Not the healthiest cactus outside :( , but still hoping. I really like the orange & size of their blossom. Have some seedlings going, but they're @ least a year away from going into Mother Earth.
Once bitten by the cactus collecting/growing bug, there is no known cure!
There's no 12 step programme for Cactaholics...so I shall just have to get some more!!

Hi hoteidoc
I bought two from a bigbox store in 6cm pots between 4 and 5 years ago. Just pumped up babies probably 2 years old then. :)
I put them straight in the ground.
They are now about 30cm tall
They had their first flowers last year but this year have had a lot more.
However, I have had 2 that I have IDed as Ferocactus emoryi ssp. Rectispinus get damaged growth points and start to offset.
This was due to cold I think. I hope that the offsets don't start to offset. :D
The plants I have IDed as Wislizenii haven't been affected (so far)
Heres a pic of the largest Ferocactus emoryi with offsets starting.
It's about the same age as the Wislizenii
It flowered last year but had just one this year :-( (you can see the spent flower)

Hi Minime8484
I think the splendor may be some time coming.
There are going to be a lot of flowers but just one at a time.
But it looks promising for future years.
(Sorry about the photo quality, it's hard to take against the sky.)

Don't remember if I ever asked, what part of Victoria are you from? Only been to Melbourne. When the terrible fires take place does it threaten area's near you?

Hi Joel,
We are about 2 hours north of Melbourne.
The high country (where a lot of the big fires are at the moment and were last year) is about 2 hours south east of us.
Thankfully we don't get bushfires often but still have to be carefull when everything around is tinder dry.
Just about the whole state is capable of igniting during heat waves.
There have been bad fires in the hills between us and Melbourne in the past as well

BTW Daiv, if you see this, congrats on your TV appearance. Well done.

This ferocactus (ID welcomed) was just outstanding after a shower of rain yesterday.

Its been a while since I posted anything, so I thought I would show a couple of pictures.
The first is the progress my "front" garden has made since November 2012. ( Check the first couple of photos on the first page of this topic to see the garden 2 years ago.

And then two pics of two firsts (at least firsts for me!!)
The first flowers I have had on Echinocactus grusonii.
This is the little plant in the front on page one of this topic. It certainly has liked its position in this garden.:-)

The next is the first flower I have ever had on my Tephrocactus articulatus v. papyracanthus. They usually fall over before a flower appears.

This female Golden Orb spider has been making a very complex and large web for months now. The Cleistocactus Baumannii is ideal for attracting bees for her. You can see a very nervous adult male golden orb in this shot as well.
