Hey, PTCG--from now on I will strongly reconsider questioning your observations! Specifically, when I got home from France, the E. leucanthus new growths turn out to be flower buds, as you had thought--not just new branches as I had thought. Here's what they look like now:

Re: Vermont Cacti 2012--this time with a GH!
Hello Dave,
your Echinocereus pulchellus var. sharpii does not resemble the common type (E. pulchellus) that I purchased last year. My plant grows much lower to the ground and has a greyish-green stem color. Also, it just flowered pink. I am interested in seeing your plant bloom.
I also do have an Echinocereus leucanthus. When I bought it, it had three flower buds, one of which was already spent. The transplanting into my outdoor cactus bed led to it dropping the other two buds. However, something is growing once again. Maybe it is going to be a flower bud, maybe it will be a side branch.
By the way, your plants do all look good.

Some recent very fine weather brought out a few more flowers and brought several buds closer to popping. This is the first blossom I've witnessed "live" on my P. magnifica.
The third flower on the E. viridiflorus. These on a Gymno. baldianum. The E. pulchellus v. sharpii had three buds that opened to white flowers only a bit on two days; the third day they opened much fuller, but I missed the photo Catch a falling star--but don't try it with a cactus!

A well-contrasting bunch of flower colors you have there! I like the redness of the Gymno and how there's a green flower on the E. viridiflorus!
A cactus and succulent collector who especially likes Ariocarpus. …Though I have a bit of everything! Want some pictures? See my flickr! I also do art and such.

Hey, Dave -- Thanks for the post on the magnifica! Just noticed mine might be thinking about blossoming, sort of caught me off guard, but it's old enough now & baldianum is a day or 2 away from full opening! BTW, are you still interested in a cutting or 2 of San Pedro's (they might even have rooted now!) since you lost a couple over the winter?

Good luck on your magnifica and baldianum, Peter. Hope you'll get to post some photos. Yes, I'd like to try my hand on the San Pedros. I'll send you a PM with the address.

Even with missing the fully open blooms, your E. pulchellus v. sharpii is especially attractive!

Thank you for the comments, Minime and Arjen. I have the regular pulchellus too, and I hope its bud(s) open soon--and I hope I don't miss it. I keep forgetting this is still early in the season, and only a few cacti tend to bloom now--especially with the cold, rainy spell we've been having. I look forward to much more color later this month and during July and August.

Things have been happening at lightning speed. Here are the latest views. Another Lobivia or probably now an Echinopsis. Can you help with the species name?
A Rebutia I bought last year. Again, can you help with the species? Here's the new Lobivia leucomalla/aka Echinopsis aurea Escobaria hesteri And a group shot (minus the Escobar) [Sorry about the color and brightness. I'm dealing with a new laptop and, as some of you know, the screen has to be tilted just right to adjust everything accurately in the Picasa editing program.]Catch a falling star--but don't try it with a cactus!

well, the aurea can certainly do without that straw flower bud!
great show, TFS!

Thanks, Arjen, I totally agree. For what it's worth to other "fanatics" who live in less than ideal cactus conditions, I've already found a GH makes a world of difference. Mine is from a catalog and was the cheapest one available that was of sturdy construction--although it was still an expensive splurge for me. But the flowers so early in the season have made it all worthwhile.StrUktO wrote:well, the aurea can certainly do without that straw flower bud!

Nice flowers! It's actually quite hilarious when the flower is a different color from the fake! Shows us how much they care/know! Plus, how your real flower dwarfs the fake one!

Nice show, and that Lobivia leucomalla flower, simply spectacular
