Already looking forward to a great new year of growing!

I'm really looking forward to getting some reichenbachii albispinus going, esp the original collection from Tishomingo. These are different enough that Weniger thought of them as a different species, and I do remember seeing a very few at Santa Fe Greenhouses many years ago and being impressed by their odd characters, especially the incredibly thin flower petals and strange spines.

and of course, the best way to grow Echinofossulocactus is to get named stuff, otherwise it's all crispatus. :-)

You couldn't be more right. I have two such things. Now I have to get some named pieces. I mean other than crispatus.

I've got the same problem with plants from a mixed packet of Echinofossulocactus. They're starting to flower and now I'm conflicted about breeding them.

I've been through the desert with an Echinofossulocactus with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la, laaa, la la la la...

I'm getting the multicostatus this year too. Hopefully there's more than one packet!

Austrocactus is an honorary Echinocereus. Or something. I just love their spines and their flowers. What are they related to? I forget.

promethean, love the lyrics there. although riding an Echinofossulocactus would probably hurt...

Closest relative seems to be Eulychnia, and they are mixed up with the Hylocereeae and a few other strange things. Although the standard groupings place Austrocactus in Tribe Notocacteae, these seem to be closer to Pachycereeae, which includes Echinocereus (sometimes placed in its own tribe).

Cacti are rude and impolite. If they don't have the tongue to tell me what's their name, they could at least have a label bearing the name. Ever since birth.

Great list!
You'll really like the E. russanthus cowperae SB130. Perfet club shaped stems with centrals that stick out a bit. Great honey yellow flowers.

Maybe someday we'll be able to send a sample in for genetic testing for $10. We could index the whole mesagarden seedlist and be able to nail down most plants within a few km of where they're from and clear up a lot of controversy about various hybrid and monstrose plant's true lineage. 8)

Still have one that bugs me!
