So i decided to start this little thread so i can share with you all my ongoing adventure with cacti...in a flat :D

Since i got my plants almost a month ago, i have reppoted them twice, got two of my babies sunburn, and i got some new aditions.

Here are some pictures of my boys.

My two lovely Trichocereus bridgesii and one of my hoodias.

My stenocactus, my john doe cactus in the middle and my other hoodia.

My lovely lopho

One of my new adittions, i think its a Haworthia attenuata.
Image

My other newcommer...i think its a M. Elongata.

I'm still a complete newbie, but i am doing my best to know more so i can care from my cacti properly...even though im trying my best, sometimes my best is not enough :|

Two of my boys got sunburned...The first one was the john doe cacti here, with those black spots (im guessing they are sunburns)

And my lovelly hoodia, that now bears some nasty scars :? ... I wasn't very worried about the john doe, but the hoodia is my favorite and i was upset...but eventually i got over it, those scars will give it some character :P

So here they are :). I know i don't have much to show but i hope in the future i have more cacti to show and hoppefully the ones i already have are bigger and stronger :D .

Thank you all for your time :D

nice pictures indeed;
the "newcomer" is a mamillaria elongata indeed; the form with a central spine (I'm not sure if it has a separate name).

But Pilif I though M elongata had red spines and a yellowish color?

there are a bazillion elongata cultivars,
these pictures show some of the diversity:

Edit: not quite sure cultivar is the correct word, but you get the point :P

Those black spots aren't sunburn. Im not sure what it is, maybe a fungus, rot or... Sunburn usually bleaches the plant skin to a yellowish/white color. Depending on how severe the burn, the skin will noticably wrinkle at the edges of the burn.

The Haworthia is not an attenuata; it may be a hybrid of attenuata and some other Haworthia such as H.coarctata. It does not resemble H.attenuata in it's form.

And indeed i will StrUktO, infact i just got 3 new little friends today...in fact not 3 but maybe 5 new friends.

Here they are!

Image

First theres this little opuntia (think its a Opuntia microdasys)...its a bit dirty, and has a few scars on the "base pad", but its a charismatic little fellow, wen i saw it i just couldn't resist it :P

Image

This one here i belive it to be a Aloe Aculeata.

Image

And finally this fellow...or better these fellows.

Image

From the first moment i saw this pot i knew that something wasn't right.
I was right...in this pot there isn't one cactus but i belive at least 2.
One on the right (the colour is very diferent), then there is the one on the left, and the little cluster on the top...im not sure if the cluster is "connected" to the one of the left, but i will repot them tomorrow and by then i shall know the answer :D.

Im very happy with these new members of my growing collection specially about that awesome little opuntia.

Again thank you all for your time :D

The one on the right, looks reminiscent, but not totally like the other ones, at least in form.

Or just a completely different species....

Here is a few diferent pictures of the same cactus.

Not the best of pictures i know.

They are too bunched up together but its clear that the one in the right is diferent.

Hey guys!

A little Update.
Indeed iann they were 3 of them in the same pot. It was a nightmare to split them apart!

Also, from now on i decided to be alot more carefull wen reading up about a cactus, and not read just little bits but everything, that would have saved me alot of trouble with my opuntia...sure it dosen't have spine but those barbs...eventually the burning ended, after a splash of vinegar.

Also i did my first cactus operation, by removing the top of the john doe cactus. The black spots where removed permanently that way...I didn't want to take any chaces, and the spots appeared to be spreading slowly. Thanks Corona for the heads up on that :D.

Yes Bonezy after a better look at some pictures your right, dosen't look much like a attenuata....Could it be something like this? http://www.cactuspedia.info/schede/HAWO ... iegata.htm

Thank you all for your time and your posts :D

Well, there's your problem! You're supposed to use lemon juice!

Just kidding. Glochids; one of the many reasons why I don't have many Opuntias. AND glochids are deciduous! In case you forget how unpleasant they are the first time.

Indeed TimN, i wont forget it that fast.

Something that is also bothering me a little bit is that my little M.enlongata. Came home with me with 4 little buds growing...i think i've counted seven today....its growing nicelly but all of the sudden the pots seems small.

Going to wait it out a bit and see what happens.

Hello everyone!!

What can i say it has been a while since i last updated this topic, a lot as changed, cacti were lost, given, etc and other have been bought and now are part of my collection :) .

So what has changed?

Well as you all know cacti collecting is extremely addicting, and for the most part i was addicted to them, i pretty much bought a couple every two weeks and such...one day wen i was contemplating my ever growing collection something hit me...i lived in a flat, i pretty much only had one place to put my cacti, and pretty much all of them were columnar, and i started wondering what it would be like in a couple of years time, wen they were a bit bigger, and all of them in the same place, on my little porch...What can i say, i kind of panicked and so today most of my former cacti are no longer with me...today i have fewer cacti, and wen i decide to buy new cacti and succulents i take several things into consideration instead of buying them like an addict

So know...time for pictures
Just wanted to point out that most of these pictures are around 2 months old.

First my old timers...
