Snowfella's cactus trials

Re: Snowfella's cactus trials
Spring is about to take a few steps back in the coming week by the sounds of things, cool change about to blow in come monday. Hopefully it won't force to many buds to abort, though my Mammillaria unchinata aborted what looks like all it's buds even with the warmth.
Most kept on going though giving me a few new flowers.
Unknown Stenocactus.
P. haselbergii, got to be my longest lasting flowers.
M. duweii starting to take off again.
M. mystax is still going
Thought I lost this G. bruchii var niveum, sat all last year without doing a thing so it was a nice suprise to find it in bud.
O. microdasys responding to spring with some new growth.
C. peruvians working on taking over the gardenbed.
M. geometrizans following suit
Small Echinopsis with hints of buds and new heads, kinda sunburned but coping.
Lobivia working on a bud aswell
And what was sold as O. cacanapa with some new growth. Still have no real idea what it could be with those spines.

Oh. That one is good. "some" new growth, ha?SnowFella wrote:O. microdasys responding to spring with some new growth.
Why is that my M. geometrizans has very short spines and yours has long?SnowFella wrote:M. geometrizans following suit
Re: Snowfella's cactus trials
Possibly the conditions it's growing in? It's inground and getting full sun from early morning to around 2pm when the fence start blocking the sun. Judging by the growth on mine it was seed grown, purchased it as a tiny 5 inch plant with short spines. Put it in the ground some 3 years ago and it's now just over 3 foot with multiple arms.
Here's the earliest photo I have of it, gardenbed has gone through some changes since then. The only 2 plants still there is the geo and Aloe plicatilis.
And April this year, the C. peruvians has it beat hands down.
This was December 1st 2010, the C. peruvians can be seen bottom left....then it was an 8 inch cutting, it's now a 5 foot monster.

Beautiful garden!

Nice little corner. Isn't it?Minime8484 wrote:Beautiful garden!

Thanks. It's been the bane of multiple beechballs last summer, poolfun + beachballs + spines = punctures for sure!
Though it's a headache in the making I'm afraid, just to small for atleast 3 large growing plants. Probably going to have to take some of the larger plants out before long and replace them with smaller ones.
Few more blooms managed to make it out here before the change in weather struck this afternoon, massive stormclouds on the horizon right now.
The unknown Stenocactus opened another 2 buds
Another little Rebutia joined in, colour sends my camera sensor to it's knees though.
And first flower for my M. marksiana, this one really doesn't like direct sun
Rest are budding up nicely, bodes well for the coming weeks/months.
M. crinta ssp wildii
M. spinosissima
M. matudae
M. rhodanata
M. gotnoideawhatitisyet
Notocactus buiningii
Unknown Notocactus, less than an inch in size and already 2 buds in the making.
G. platenese
Think this total unknown is working on a bud aswell, in a 2 inch pot.
"Rescue" Lobivia/Echinopsis, found as a knocked off head underneath the C&Sbench at the local big box store last year. Pocketed it, popped it on some soil and it's gone nuts with gratiture ever since.
And lastly my Hylocereus seedling forrest, god knowns what I'll do with these as they grow up

Nice plants and flowers! As for the hylocerus, graft something onto them!

Re: Snowfella's cactus trials
That is the first Steno I remember seeing where the flowers (very impressive, BTW) have not been prevented from opening full wide by the spines on top!
Catch a falling star--but don't try it with a cactus!
Re: Snowfella's cactus trials
'Rescue' Lobivia is possible L. arachnacantha. Apropos Hylocereus, maybe a little Pitahaya farm?

Re: Snowfella's cactus trials
Change of weather was mainly cancelled, back up to 30 degrees yesterday with more sunshine to come. Shame in a way as I wouldn't of had anything against a few cool days since I have some diggin in the garden to do.
M. bocasana starting to warm up to spring.
M. spinosissima
M. crinta ssp wildii
Unknown Mamm starting up aswell.
Another unknown, possibly M. magnimamma. Not a happy camper down by the soil line though.
Another M. magnimamma, I think
One for Majcka
And lastly 2 battlers trying hard to work their way through last summers mite infestation.
R. fulviseta
L. williamsii

Looks like you've got a fast start on the season. May it be a good one for you!

Re: Snowfella's cactus trials
the "cacanapa" looks like macrocentra to me (one of the azurea types as described by Powell and Weedin). Beautiful plants, great to see spring starting on the other side of the world!

Re: Snowfella's cactus trials
Another warm spring day here, warmest yet with temps climbing up to 33C/91F in the shade. Expecting an afternoon thunderstorm to hit sometime this afternoon that hopefully will cool things down overnight.
Photobomb incoming too, some repeats but also some new plants.
M. spinosissima....again
M. crinita ssp wildii...again
M. elongata, first flowers for me on this one.
M. zeilmanniana albiflora
Unknown Mamm, first flowers again
M. magnimamma....again
About to get bright in the Epi corner soon.
Better photo of that Opuntia, buds or new pads?
My vetoed Aloe, wife wants it gone Letting it flower one last time then I'll get rid of it somehow, weighs a ton though.
M. mystax has now flowered all the way from ground level almost to the apex.
And 2 photos of the whole insanity, have to replace the overflow bench soon as it's just getting to flimsy. Plus I can no longer fit all the plants
