Cacti ID please!

I have this cacti that my father had dropped so I'm looking to find out what species it is so I know what size pot to put him in. since the pot cracked it hasn't been doing well and I'll accept any suggestions you guys may have

Is it basally offsetting or these are 2 together? And where did you acquire it? This helps narrow down the genus
The other seems to be rotting so clear everything, remove soil and check for rot on the healthy stem. Then repot in a mineral mix and hold off water until spring

Ok yeah, they were together but when it fell the other broke off. It doesn't appear to have root damage but I'll double check. Could you clarify "mineral mix", or is there a section in the forum for that? I have a cacti mix that I was shown to use, but if it's specific I'd like to know

Well a mineral mix is more suitable for cacti. There are tons of recipes out there from straight pùmice to more sophisticated mixes. A good mix would be 40% commercial soil with 60% either pumice or perlite or grit or rock chippings or clay balls or baked clay cat litter.... you get the idea.
If it's from a grocery store, it must be common and will be figured out soon

Pot size is usually not an issue for cacti. When they get too big you'll know it as they get top heavy and fall over Full sun and water when actively growing is all columnars need in my experience. For young/small specimens small pot is better as it reduces chance of rot should it get soaked.
