Most recent cactus with no id...

Post by Harrison »

Got this today in Bakersfield, CA at a nursery with a good selection of cacti and succulents but unfortunately nothing was labelled. Approximately 18 inches tall. Thanks in advance for any help.

Saw one like that at our local garden centre in the UK last week, obviously an imported top cut from Holland or somewhere similar, but only about 9 inches high and they wanted £47 ($65) for it. Some of these non specialist places do not know what to charge for a cactus. Who knows they may get some idiot interior decorator to buy it. Bit like EBAY I expect, if you call it rare and put a stupid price on it somebody will buy it.

Apparently the larger cacti we get here similar to this one are coming from belgium from a company called "Ariane cactus" with ridiculous prices too. A victoria reginae in 30cm bowl costs 50$. A cephalorceus senilis of around 1.2m at 250$ (i would get if it was cheaper). Euphorbia candelabrum 1.8m 350$. That's just crazy. They're not rare at all to ask such prices.

Thank you, I'd never heard of that name before. I don't know if it was a good price at us $45 but I thought it seemed fair for it's size and apparently good health. There was another one there that was branching more but looked to have a white chalky residue on it so I went with the cleaner one.

Depends what you mean by "chalky residue". Some of these plants produce a whitish waxy coating as protection from the sun known as "farina", or they are said to be "farinose". Really a natural form of sunscreen:-

"farinose, (botany) Covered with a sort of white, mealy powder, as the leaves of some poplars; mealy."

In the Other Succulents some Echevaria's also do so and if you touch them it comes off on your fingers leaving finger marks spoiling the look of the plant, rather like the removable bloom on black grapes.

Myrtillocactus is a genus that does that on new growth in sunny climates gradually loosing it on the older growth, though tends to always stay greener in less sunny climates. It is nothing to worry about and a characteristic of the species.

I've noticed this on some of my other cactus, mostly Opuntia varieties. This is kind of what it looked like.

Maybe I should have gotten the one with more branching then! I enjoy seeing them grow anyway, hopefully it does as well where I am a little North of where it was.
