Is this a chain fruit cholla?

If you have a cactus plant and need help identifying it, this is the place to post it.

Is this a chain fruit cholla?

Post by Harrison »

Hello,
I am new to this forum but I've been collecting different types of cactus for a few years now. I've had this cholla for a while but never was able to nail down the exact kind it is. It's lost several arms since this photo was taken but it's still growing and is taller now. Thanks for any help!

Looks like Silver Cholla (Cylindropuntia Echinocarpa) or Jumping Cholla (cylindropuntia fulgida)

Jumping Cholla sure sounds right, I've had to re-pot this twice now and it sends segments flying at every shake! Next year it goes in the ground for good, no more pots. These look so similar it's hard to figure out which cholla we're looking at. Thanks for your help.

Yeah that's that main way they propagate. The seeds rarely sprout so parts of the plants just detach at the joint and root where ever they come to a test. Pretty cool.

Chain fruit cholla and cylindropuntia fulgida are the same thing. Jumping cholla can refer to most reasonably spiny cholla from the US southwest.
There is no cactus you can't eat, but you just might regret it if you eat the wrong one.
