I would think a Monadenium ritchiei.

The leaf is real but temporary, i.e. it drops the leaves often (but it grows new ones eventually)

Yes, Monadenium ritchiei. As advised, watch your watering. Stay on the dry side.

From my experience this one can take a lot of water when in active growth. Or at least not rot prone. Leaves, that is usually for me the sign of water loving succulents. I can't think of an exception (but I am sure they are out there).

I visited my brother in Kenya (their natural habitat) for a while and was asking around about them in nurseries. Few had them because they were not a good investment as they almost always died from rot.
