Mystery columnars

Post by ElieEstephane »

I have these columnars grown from seed. Most are 6 sided but i have 1 with 5 ribs and one with seven. However the 6 sided are very fast growers with more than 3 inches in a few months while the others are much slower. They have a certain trichocereus bridgesii feeling to me but colors are reminiscent of myrtillocactus geometrizans.
The other columnar is also a pretty fast grower (from 2 inches to 7-8 inches in a few months). Im thinking echinopsis.
Any thoughts?
Thank you.

Im gonna step up and say #2 is trichocereus trigosus
http://troutsnotes.com/tag/trichocereus/
Or trichocereus terscheckii
http://www.cactusplaza.com/trichocereus ... ckii-seeds
But in any case definitely a trichocereus

I would have thought the blue ones are Myrtilocactus, but I warn you I have a zillion unidentified columnars, meaning I am no expert.

Hi
I'm shure too that it's a member of the trichocereus bunch!

If you look at the vertical shot of one of my Trichos you'll see a strong similarity

It is probably younger than your plant and the columnar shape is not yet very significant.

Working-name is "Tricho-3"...

I have a younger trichocereus too. I never imagined it would be a columnar. It looks very globular and I thought it was some melo.

Here's the answer to my question. I thought P. Chichepe is related to stenocereus but it's actually related to myrtillocactus. I guess this explains why there are 2 "species" from the same seed batch. Maybe the seeds were a cross between Polaskia chichepe and myrtillocactus :-k
Another proof, look closely at the seedling in the middle of this pot i bought earlier. It doesn't have The greyish hue of Polaskia chichepe and has much fewer spines per areole: 4 spines per areole to be exact - same as my "true" Myrtillocactus geometrizans.
