Stenocactus or Stenocereus?

Post by AlanW »

I bought this beauty this morning but it was confidently labelled Stenocereus pruinosus . I've trawled various picture galleries & Stenocereus pruinosus comes up as grey/green 3 or 4 ribbed columnar species. When I search for Stenocactus pruinosus I still get various different options with various flower colours.
So does anyone know what I have guys?

Very likely stenocactus crispatus.
There is no cactus you can't eat, but you just might regret it if you eat the wrong one.

Definitely a Stenocactus, in any case.

Thanks guys. I've found an image of crispatus on Google that has very similar spines & flowers so I'll settle on that. It seems very variable.

The label is correct in it's description of Stenocereus, but has obviously been stuck in the wrong plant by somebody who does not know the difference.

"Pruinose definition: coated with a powdery or waxy bloom."

I would go with stenocactus/echinofossulocactus crispatus. It is a cactus supplied to garden centres etc by pughs cacti very popular supplier in the UK I recognise the labels and I know they stock both crispatus, multicostatus and zacatecasensis but not really any other stenocactus species crispatus looks right.

I tend to blame the garden centre or customers. There were a number of cacti knocked over & labels could easily be misplaced

Yeah that happens in my local garden centre too and the uninformed staff and customs will just stick them back in any pot. Keep any eye on when you garden centre restocks as the trays supplied by pugh's cacti usually have a couple of lophophora at the cheapest prices you will find.

These guys I believe. They supply all the garden centres near me very good quality plants at good prices and a pretty good variety. There is alao a guy who sells these on ebay and just adds postage to the cost.
