If you have a cactus plant and need help identifying it, this is the place to post it.

Volunteer seedlings in Tucson

Post by Melt In The Sun »

Hi gang,
I have a few different species volunteering in my yard...most I have identified but I'm not sure about this one. Any ideas? I thought maybe Peniocereus, but the spines look too large and yellow based on photos I was able to find. Maybe Pachycereus marginatus? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Tumamoc. There are some plants in my neighbors' yards that have produced some fruit.

Seedlings are rare relative to the number of these plants around Tucson and everywhere else. I'll bet 99.9% of the plants we see started from rooted cuttings.

I have a very large tree size Cereus peruvianus monstrose in my landscape that produces an abundance of flowers and fruit every year. I occasionally find seedlings in other parts of the landscape which is the result of bird feeding on the fruit, I suppose.
