Mamm. crinita?
Mamm. crinita?
Do I have this right? Crinita or wildii or both? A mass of intertwined heads.

Re: Mamm. crinita?
It looks very much like my cactus which was kindly identified by forum members as M. crinita zeilmania.
The ID, which includes a photo of my m. crinita further down the page for comparison, can be found here:

Re: Mamm. crinita?
Could it be Mammillaria fittkaui?
Buying a cactus a day will keep the madness away.

Re: Mamm. crinita?
Mammillaria crinita subsp. zeilmanniana looks right to me. M. wildii is a synonym for crinita.

Re: Mamm. crinita?
M. zeilmanniana has reddish flowers, that looks like what I usually grew as M. wildii, which is now considered a subspecies of M. crinita, or even reduced to synonymy under it.

http://www.cactofili.org/specie.asp?mod ... sp.+wildii" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Mammillaria crinita is very variable and many former species are now often reduced to synonymy under it by the "lumpers":-
Synonyms:
M. aureoviridis
M. aurihamata
M. brevicrinita
M. crinita var pauciseta
M. criniformis
M. erectohamata
M. felipensis
M. leucantha
M. moeller-valdeziana
M. painteri
M. puberula
M. schelhasei
M. seideliana sensu Reppenhagen
M. variabilis

Surprisingly this is the only picture of M. fitkauii I can find on the web, I lost mine years ago:-

Re: Mamm. crinita?
Usually deep pink/purplish flowers on zeilmanniana, but some are paler - it does look pretty close to wildii, though.

Whatever we call it, I really like the little guy. It's not really a cluster, heads just pop out anywhere they please. Almost like a monstrose but the heads are not misshapen. Thanks for the discussion. Sue
