old guy needed a home
old guy needed a home
I just acquired a few old timers in need of TLC. Any idea who this is? I'm trying to match with pix in my books but just not sure. TIA, Sue

Re: old guy needed a home
That first one looks like some sort of Pilosocereus - but not sure - mine are alot smaller.
Re: old guy needed a home
That's the problem I'm having: often the ID photos are of young plants or habitat shots that don't show enough detail. Some Piloscereus look close but not sure. Thanks for jumping in; no one else is even guessing. Sue
Re: old guy needed a home
Sorry Sue, columnars are just so difficult to identify, particularly given the absence of many uncommon species in collections.
See my current wanted lists here: http://www.u.arizona.edu/~mdpillet/cr.html and http://www.u.arizona.edu/~mdpillet/en.html.
Re: old guy needed a home
For right now I hope they are happy to be in larger pots. I had to cut the plastic pieces of broken pot that were girdling some of the roots. I'm a sucker for rescue cactus; especially really old ones. Got an old Uebelmannia with this group, a bit scarred but about 8" around.

Hello,
I agree with Pilosocereus for the first picture.
The second looks like its more or less already in cactus heaven (sorry but I would turn my efforts to the other plants)
The third one I would label Cereus spec. (?).
Gerd

The one you think is dead has new growth at the tips & 2 new pups. Everything I picked up was sunburned & stressed. There was the remains of a label with Cleistocactus (something blurred). Guess I'll have to be OK with vague genera classes & hope for blooms. Thanks, Sue

Re: old guy needed a home
Close up shots of the new spination at the top of the shoota would probably help matching your plants with smaller ones and web photos.,
Re: old guy needed a home
Think I'll just live with them for awhile & see how they do. Thanks all. Sue
Re: old guy needed a home
Lucky you!
In New Jersey even?
The first one is Eulychnia saint-pieana- or whatever synonym it's got this month.
That's a slow grower, very old plant.
The second one is too stressed to give ID but it's probably a Cleistocactus. Best see if it plumps up and gets some new growth then go at it from there. I don't see it as any other genera.
Third is a Trichocereus for sure, or Echinopsis, if you prefer.
There are too many names in the hat for this one but its a common type.
Really nice rescue, those all deserve a good home!

Eulychnia is a new one for me! Just checked the guide & bingo, perfect match. Thanks so much. Now I can take good care of him. Sue
Re: old guy needed a home
This had a faded tag that just said Cop. Is it some kind of Copiapoa?
Edited: ID by Dogwood as Copiapoa coquimbana. Matches pix in guide. Thanks, Sue

Dogwood has been a huge help but I thought I'd throw one more out for the group. Hard to see details with the spines but it seem to have tubercles like a mamm. A bit stressed from neglect but had a good root system when I re-potted. TIA Sue
